Within the framework of social integration and development of Barrio Padre Mugica de Retiro, the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene of Buenos Aires will begin the work of placing 252 posters. In this way, 94 streets and 28 open spaces will be identified with names.

“We are taking a step forward in the integration of the City. As for years, we continue working on improvements within Barrio 31. The placement of these posters will give identity and belonging to each public space where more than 40,000 neighbors live ”, expressed the Minister of Public Space and Urban Hygiene of the City Clara Muzzio.

“The opening of streets in popular neighborhoods and naming them represents everything we seek in the socio-urban integration processes. We want all the residents of the city to be able to access services, to live in their illuminated neighborhood and integrated into the fabric of the rest of the City, ”he said. María Migliore, Minister of Human Development and Habitat of the City.

“Today we took a fundamental step in the history of the neighborhood that is part of the process of formalization and social and urban integration. Having a formal address is something that most of the residents of the City take for granted, but that in the Barrio Mugica it was a debt. The formal address facilitates job search and procedures, improves access to services and avoids confusion when identifying addresses “, he mentioned. Diego Fernández, Secretary of Social and Urban Integration of the Government of the City.

For the definition of the names, more than 1,100 residents participated and about 1,500 proposals were received.. Once the vote was done, it was decided which names to place according to the themes.

Finally, the winning names that can be seen reflected in the neighborhood will be:

  • The longitudinal streets will refer to the fauna of Latin America: Yaguareté, Colibrí, Alpaca, Puma, Llama, Águila, Guacamayo, Yacaré, Vicuña, Aguará Guazú, Armadillo, Guanaco, Huemul, Deer of the pampa and, Quetzal.

  • Two streets will bear names linked to the history of the Retiro neighborhood: “December 3, 2009” which recalls the date of the enactment of the City law that established the urbanization of Villa 31; and “Alberto Chejolan” in memory of the militant of the Peronist villero movement, assassinated by the Federal Police in March 1974.

  • The public spaces will have names of dances, dances and rhythms: Conga, Polca, Malambo, Caporales, Marinera, Chamamé, Mambo, Bolero, Ranchera and Bailecito.
