Oklahoma residents will soon be able to enroll in, renew or change their health insurance coverage through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, giving individuals and families an opportunity to compare Affordable Care Act plans for the 2027 coverage year.

Open Enrollment begins Nov. 1, allowing consumers to review available health plans and select coverage based on their medical needs and household budgets. Oklahoma will continue using the federal exchange for the 2027 plan year, while the state prepares to transition to its own state-based exchange beginning in 2028.

Oklahoma Residents Can Review Marketplace Coverage

During Open Enrollment, eligible Oklahoma residents can enroll in a Marketplace health insurance plan for the first time, renew existing coverage or switch to another available policy.

Consumers who want their coverage to begin Jan. 1 must complete enrollment or make changes by Dec. 15. Meeting that deadline can help avoid a potential gap in health insurance coverage at the beginning of the year.

Residents are encouraged to compare more than monthly premiums when evaluating their options. Deductibles, copayments, prescription drug benefits, provider networks and other out-of-pocket expenses can affect the overall cost and suitability of a policy.

Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready encouraged consumers to review their household health care requirements before choosing coverage.

“Oklahomans should review their family’s health needs to secure the best possible coverage for 2027,” Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready said. “Visit HealthCare.gov as early as possible to compare plans and find the right fit.”

Five Insurers to Offer Individual Health Plans

Five insurers will offer individual Marketplace health plans to Oklahoma consumers for the upcoming coverage year.

The participating insurers are Ambetter of Oklahoma, through Celtic Insurance Company; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma; CommunityCare Oklahoma; Oscar Health; and UnitedHealthcare.

The number of choices available to an individual consumer will depend on the county where they live. While Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma will provide statewide options, coverage from the other participating insurers will vary by county.

That geographic variation means consumers may see different combinations of insurers and plans depending on their home address.

When comparing coverage, residents may also want to confirm whether their preferred physicians, hospitals and other medical providers participate in a plan’s network. Prescription drug coverage and expected medical expenses can also play an important role in determining which policy is appropriate for a household.

Six Stand-Alone Dental Providers Available

Oklahoma residents seeking dental coverage will also have access to six stand-alone dental plan providers through the federal Marketplace.

The participating dental providers are Best Life, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma Dental, EMI Health, Guardian, Humana and Renaissance.

Stand-alone dental plans are separate from individual medical policies and provide another option for consumers seeking coverage for dental care as part of their broader insurance planning.

As with medical insurance, consumers should review the details of individual dental plans, including provider networks, covered services and potential out-of-pocket expenses.

Oklahoma Preparing for State-Based Exchange

Oklahoma will remain on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace throughout the 2027 plan year. The state is expected to begin its transition to a state-based exchange in 2028.

For the upcoming enrollment cycle, however, the existing federal Marketplace structure remains in place. Consumers will continue to compare participating insurers and available coverage based on their location and eligibility.

With multiple medical and dental insurers participating, Oklahoma residents will have an opportunity during Open Enrollment to reassess their current coverage and compare alternatives before selecting a plan for the coming year.
