Works & Process will present VOX: American Voices Opera Lab on November 16, 2026, at the Peter B. Lewis Theater in New York City, marking the revival of an initiative dedicated to developing large-scale operas by contemporary American composers. The event will feature performances, discussions with participating arts organizations, and previews of four new operas selected for the 2027 VOX Showcase.
VOX Opera Lab Returns After Extended Hiatus
Originally established by New York City Opera in 1999, VOX was created to support the development of ambitious new American operas. Following an extended hiatus, the program is returning through a collaboration involving several prominent New York City music and performing arts institutions.
The revived initiative brings together American Composers Orchestra, Beth Morrison Projects, MasterVoices, the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Mannes Opera at The New School, Manhattan School of Music’s Vocal Arts Division, and the Perelman Center for the Performing Arts (PAC NYC).
The collaboration aims to provide composers and librettists with opportunities to develop new works requiring substantial orchestral and vocal resources.
November 16 Event to Feature Performances and Artist Discussions
The Works & Process presentation will take place Monday, November 16, at 7 p.m. at the Peter B. Lewis Theater, located at 1071 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
Tickets start at $15.
The program will include a panel discussion featuring representatives of the participating VOX institutions, alongside approximately 10-minute piano-and-vocal excerpts from each finalist’s opera.
Artists from the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program will also perform.
The evening will examine VOX’s history, its relaunch, and the challenges of developing contemporary American opera. Attendees will have an opportunity to continue discussions during a reception in the rotunda.
Four New Operas Selected as VOX 2027 Finalists
The revived VOX program has selected four works-in-progress for its 2027 showcase.
Selected Composers and Librettists
-
Desert Bloom: Gillian Rae Perry, composer; Mo Holmes, librettist.
-
Robenson/Moscow: Scott Davenport Richards, composer and co-librettist; David Cote, co-librettist.
-
The Wedding Banquet: Huang Ruo, composer; James Schamus, librettist.
-
Fallingwater: Joshua Schmidt, composer; Dick Scanlan, librettist.
Each project will receive an opportunity to present excerpts before audiences and representatives of the opera industry.
The selection reflects VOX’s emphasis on supporting new American operas and providing emerging and established creative teams with resources to develop ambitious productions.
VOX Showcase Scheduled for April 2027 at PAC NYC
The four finalist operas will be presented at the VOX Showcase on Thursday, April 1, 2027, at the Perelman Center for the Performing Arts in Lower Manhattan.
The showcase will feature book-in-hand concert presentations of approximately 20 to 30 minutes from each work.
Unlike the smaller November previews, the April performances will involve soloists, a full orchestra, and a chorus.
These larger presentations will allow composers and librettists to evaluate how their music and dramatic material function with the orchestral and vocal forces required for a full-scale opera.
The format also offers industry professionals an opportunity to assess works still undergoing development.
Addressing Challenges in American Opera Development
Although American opera continues to attract composers, librettists, and audiences interested in contemporary storytelling, opportunities to develop large-scale productions remain limited.
Grand opera typically requires significant financial resources, rehearsal time, orchestral musicians, singers, and production support.
VOX seeks to address these challenges by creating a collaborative environment in which artists can experiment, revise, and evaluate their compositions before pursuing full productions.
The initiative is intended to serve as an intermediate development platform rather than a traditional opera festival focused exclusively on completed works.
Works & Process Continues Supporting Performing Artists
Works & Process, which is presenting the November event, supports performing artists through funded creative residencies and public programs combining artistic discussions with performance excerpts.
The organization produces more than 25 residencies annually in partnership with over a dozen organizations across seven states.
Its residency programs provide studio access, housing, artist fees, transportation stipends, and assistance with health insurance enrollment.
Across more than 100 residencies involving over 1,000 artists, supported projects have subsequently received grants, awards, and opportunities to tour nationally and internationally.
Works & Process also collaborates with New York City cultural institutions, including 92NY, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ Jerome Robbins Dance Division, and Free Food Refettorio Harlem.
Its programming includes free outdoor dance presentations developed with Manhattan West.
Funding and Institutional Support
Works & Process receives support from private foundations, individual donors, and public cultural agencies.
Major supporters include the AG Foundation, Leon Levy Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The Evelyn Sharp Foundation, and The SHS Foundation.
Public funding is provided in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts, with support from state government.
Revival Creates New Opportunities for American Opera
The return of VOX introduces another development opportunity for composers and librettists working on ambitious contemporary operas.
Beginning with the November 16 presentation and continuing through the April 2027 showcase, the initiative will give four creative teams access to performers, institutional expertise, and public feedback as their works progress toward potential full productions.
