Vintage NFL clothing is commanding sharply different prices depending on the team, with Philadelphia Eagles apparel emerging as the most expensive and Houston Texans merchandise ranking as the most affordable, according to a new analysis of more than 96,000 online listings.
The study by QR Code Generator analyzed 96,053 eBay listings covering all 32 NFL teams and six apparel categories: jerseys, hats and caps, jackets, T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, and shorts. Researchers calculated trimmed average asking prices by excluding the highest and lowest 5% of prices and averaging the remaining 90%.
Across the NFL, the trimmed average asking price for vintage apparel was $43.40.
Eagles, Bills and Lions Command Highest Vintage Prices
The Philadelphia Eagles topped the ranking with a trimmed average asking price of $71.79, or 65.4% above the league average. Eagles jackets were particularly expensive, averaging $206.35, while vintage jerseys averaged $55.44.
The Buffalo Bills followed closely at $71.00. Bills jackets averaged $202.80, the second-highest figure in that category, while the team’s vintage T-shirts led the league at $51.93.
Detroit Lions apparel ranked third at $70.87. Lions jerseys, hats and caps, and T-shirts each placed among the most expensive items in their respective categories.
The Las Vegas Raiders ranked fourth at $67.33, helped by vintage hats and caps averaging a study-high $70.53. Jacksonville Jaguars apparel followed at $61.14, while the Seattle Seahawks ranked sixth at $59.06. Seahawks jerseys were the most expensive vintage jerseys in the study, averaging $70.52.
The San Francisco 49ers ranked seventh at $56.49, followed by the Los Angeles Chargers at $55.62, Chicago Bears at $50.19 and Miami Dolphins at $49.69.
Texans and Colts Offer More Affordable Vintage Apparel
At the opposite end of the market, Houston Texans vintage apparel carried an average asking price of $29.99, 30.9% below the league average. Texans hats were the least expensive in the study at $20.46.
The Indianapolis Colts ranked as the second-most affordable at $32.66. Colts jerseys, T-shirts, and sweatshirts and hoodies were the cheapest in their respective categories.
Green Bay Packers apparel averaged $32.98, with Packers jackets the league’s least expensive at $61.66. Tampa Bay Buccaneers merchandise averaged $33.40, followed by Denver Broncos apparel at $33.76.
Despite the Packers’ relatively low average prices, the study reported more than 20,000 pieces of vintage Green Bay apparel on eBay, highlighting how supply can influence asking prices.
Scarcity and ’90s Designs Drive Premiums
Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, said changing fashion preferences have contributed to growing interest in older sports apparel.
“Vintage sportswear has become a fashion statement in recent years, with many fans opting for the bold colors and loud designs of classic styles over the more understated designs and muted colors of the newest wares. There are many reasons why some fans might prefer older items. Some fans might want to recognize their team or city’s history, some might see older items as higher quality, and for some fans it might just be that they prefer the cuts and stylings of vintage items.
“While these reasons might be hard to quantify, it is undeniable that the average piece of vintage apparel can be a lot cheaper than a similar piece fresh off the rack. Of the six categories that were analyzed, the average vintage listing price was below the benchmark for new NFL merch, with vintage jerseys costing less than a third of the average price for a $150 regular adult NFL jersey. The average fan could easily show their colors at a fraction of the price if they go with the average vintage listing, and potentially earn some kudos while wearing classic designs.
Porcar said some merchandise from the 1990s commanded particularly large premiums.
“While the average vintage piece was below the benchmark, there were naturally pieces that far exceeded the average asking price. We found that some of the most expensive listings were from the ’90s, with sharktooth designs proving particularly popular. This design had the highest price premium of the non-unique, game worn, or team-issued listings, at 151.6%, and is commonly found on snapbacks and caps. This, combined with the snapback category itself carrying a 74.2% premium, is one of the main reasons why vintage hats and caps were so close to the price of new hats and caps.
Limited Supply Emerges as Key Pricing Factor
The analysis also pointed to scarcity as an important factor behind the highest-priced vintage NFL items.
“The data also showed that scarcity is probably the largest driver behind the price of the costliest vintage clothing. The categories with the largest premiums were all relatively small in number, with categories like ‘one of one’ carrying the largest premium with just nine listings. At the other end of the scale, you have the mass market items that have huge supply in comparison. For example, Reebok was the only brand to carry a negative premium due to it being the brand that made the mass-produced 2000s apparel. We may see a similar effect with Nike if it stops being the NFL’s on-field supplier.”
The findings suggest that vintage NFL merchandise prices reflect more than team popularity alone. Supply, distinctive designs and nostalgia for earlier eras, particularly the bold styling associated with the 1990s, appear to be playing an important role in determining asking prices across the resale market.
