Oklahoma is moving forward with a major expansion of its commercial spaceflight infrastructure as state officials and Dawn Aerospace prepare to break ground on a new mission control facility and spaceplane hangar at Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport in Burns Flat. The $7.5 million state-supported project is intended to establish the spaceport as a center for reusable, runway-based commercial spaceflight operations.

Oklahoma Advances Commercial Spaceflight With New Spaceport Facilities

The Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA), Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA), and Dawn Aerospace have scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.

The project is supported by a $7.5 million appropriation approved by the Oklahoma Legislature and includes two facilities designed to support future spaceplane operations.

The development will feature a 5,000-square-foot mission control and operations center alongside a 10,000-square-foot hangar built to accommodate Dawn Aerospace’s reusable Mk-II Aurora spaceplane.

The investment represents another step in Oklahoma’s efforts to expand its aerospace industry and establish Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport as a national destination for commercial spaceflight.

New Mission Control Center and Spaceplane Hangar

The planned mission control facility will provide operational infrastructure for Dawn Aerospace’s activities at the Burns Flat spaceport.

The accompanying hangar will accommodate the company’s Mk-II Aurora, a rocket-powered aircraft designed to conduct reusable suborbital missions.

Together, the facilities are expected to strengthen the spaceport’s ability to support frequent flight operations using conventional runway infrastructure.

Construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2027, aligning with Dawn Aerospace’s anticipated start of operations at the Oklahoma facility.

Unlike conventional rockets that rely on vertical launches, Aurora is designed to take off and land horizontally using standard airport runways.

This approach could provide an alternative operating model for commercial suborbital missions, allowing reusable spaceplanes to operate from facilities resembling traditional airports.

Reusable Spaceplane Technology Supports Frequent Flights

Dawn Aerospace is developing the Mk-II Aurora as a reusable, rocket-powered platform capable of conducting suborbital flight missions.

Its runway-based design is intended to support more frequent operations than traditional launch systems, which typically require specialized vertical-launch infrastructure.

The proposed Oklahoma facilities will provide a dedicated base for these activities, supporting mission management and aircraft operations.

Dawn Aerospace expects to begin operating the Mk-II Aurora at Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport in 2027.

State Leaders and Aerospace Executives to Attend Groundbreaking

The October 13 ceremony will bring together Oklahoma government officials, aerospace industry representatives, and Dawn Aerospace leadership.

Scheduled speakers include:

  • Matt Pinnell, Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma

  • John Budd, CEO of the Oklahoma Department of Commerce

  • Nick Archer, Oklahoma State Representative

  • Anthony Moore, Oklahoma House Speaker Pro Tempore

  • Paul Rosino, Oklahoma State Senator

  • Gabe Sherman, Managing Partner at The Artemis Group and former NASA Chief of Staff

  • Stefan Powell, Co-Founder and CEO of Dawn Aerospace

  • Grayson Ardies, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics and CEO of OSIDA

The event will feature a ceremonial groundbreaking at the future construction site, along with opportunities for interviews with state officials and company representatives.

The event will highlight the planned locations of the mission control building and spaceplane hangar, providing an overview of the project’s scope and expected development timeline.

Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport Expands Its Aerospace Infrastructure

Located in western Oklahoma, Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport is positioned to support the state’s growing interest in commercial aerospace operations.

The planned investment reflects Oklahoma’s strategy to develop infrastructure capable of attracting spaceflight companies and supporting emerging aerospace technologies.

The mission control center and hangar will add dedicated operational capacity for reusable spaceplane activities.

The project also highlights the role of state funding and partnerships with private aerospace companies in developing commercial space infrastructure.

By accommodating runway-based spaceflight systems, the spaceport aims to establish a position in a developing segment of the commercial aerospace market.

Construction Expected to Finish in Fall 2027

The Dawn Aerospace mission control facility and hangar are expected to be completed in fall 2027, while the company’s Mk-II Aurora operations are also planned to begin that year.

The $7.5 million investment marks a significant infrastructure commitment for Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport and supports Oklahoma’s efforts to become a center for commercial spaceflight.

As construction progresses, the project will provide a foundation for Dawn Aerospace’s planned reusable spaceplane operations and the state’s longer-term ambitions in the aerospace sector.
