The orange and red cloud, part of the Sh2-284 nebula, known as the Smiling Cat Nebula, was obtained with data from the VLT Survey Telescope located at the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

This nebula The vast region of dust and gas and its bright region, As seen in the captured image, it is about 150 light-years (over 1,400 trillion kilometers) across. It is located about 15,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Monoceros.

At the center of the nebula’s brightest part, just below the ‘cat’s nose’, is a cluster of young stars known as Dollidge 25, which produce high amounts of radiation and strong winds. The The radiation is powerful enough to ionize the hydrogen gas in the cloud. This creates its bright orange and red colors. Clouds like these contain the “bricks” for building new stars.

Winds from the central cluster blow away the gas and dust in the nebula, hollowing out its core. When air encounters dense pockets of material, they offer more resistance, meaning the areas around them erode first.

This creates several pillars that line the edges of Sh2-284, pointing to the center of the nebula, on the right side of the image. Although these pillars appear small in the image, they are actually several light-years across and contain large amounts of gas and dust from which new stars form.
