The project, which is a continuation of an earlier version (GEOVACUI-1), was funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fecyt). Led by the Complutense University of Madrid, it had scholarly participation from the Universities of Barcelona, ​​Burgos, Málaga and Seville. It is a pilot project for NEWSERA and is listed at the Citizen Science Observatory in Spain and at eu-citizen.science.

This project aims to address the phenomenon of population migration in rural areas, and unify the academic perspective with the citizen, by encouraging participatory methodologies. The work focused on a range of initiatives favoring or detrimental to population stabilization in rural Spain and on identifying specific elements of good practice. Likewise, it seeks to open lines of discussion to deepen, in a collaborative manner, the knowledge of the causes, consequences, problems and opportunities associated with the population migration situation in those areas and to stimulate the participation of citizens in research activities, in order to promote scientific culture in society.

For awarding this prize, the jury evaluated the project’s contribution to the discussion and highlighting the challenge of rural population migration in Spain, as well as the open activities developed to promote scientific culture, in addition to the development of a repository with bibliographic materials, good practices, interactive mapping with initiatives, The document contains the essential elements of good practices, recommendations, conclusions and recommendations.
