“I'm very disappointed in how backward Windows' usability is and how program management teams don't fix usability problems,” Bill Gates wrote in a 2003 email to Microsoft's president of platforms, Jim Allchin.

Same co-founder Microsoft He complained about his primary operating system as he was having trouble installing the application on his computer. It's Windows Movie Maker.

In addition to complaining about the application, Gates raised concerns about Microsoft.com, the site used to download the programs.

“I decided to download Movie Maker and buy the Digital Plus package, so I went to Microsoft.com. I went there because they have a dumping ground. The first 5 times I used the site, it timed out when I tried to open the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I was able to get it to appear. This site is so slow it's unusable,” Gates wrote.

Bill Gates faced challenges when trying to download and use Windows Movie Maker, an easily accessible software, especially for him led by Microsoft. His experience, described in an email, highlights the surprising usability difficulties on Microsoft's website.

Searching for Movie Maker turned out to be a daunting task, with a confusing list of names that look simple compared to file paths in Windows. The platform's slowness added another frustration, belying the performance expected from a leading technology platform.

The process did not improve over time; Instead of providing a download shortcut, Gates was directed to Windows Update, which suggested a more convoluted process that involved downloading multiple controls.

Five years later, after the email was made public, Gates commented in an interview: “What do you think I do every day? It's my job to send an email like that. That's what we do. Our goal is to create improvements.”

Windows Movie Maker, part of the Windows Essentials software suite, was officially discontinued by Microsoft in January 2017.

The program, which allows users to easily create and edit videos, was popular among home users for its ease of use and basic video editing functions. Over the years, it received several updates to adapt to newer versions of Windows up to Windows 8.1.

After its discontinuation, Microsoft advised users to switch to other video editing software alternatives, including the Windows 10 Photos app, which offers tools for creating and editing videos in ways similar to Movie Maker.

While it is still possible to find websites that offer Windows Movie Maker downloads, it is important to proceed with caution as Microsoft no longer provides official support for the software. And these downloads may not be safe or may contain malicious software

Bill Gates began to gradually step away from his operational role at Microsoft in 2000.When he stepped down as CEO, Steve Palmer took his place.

However, Gates maintained an active involvement in the company, serving as chairman of the board and chief software architect. This change marked the beginning of a gradual shift towards his philanthropic interests through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

On June 27, 2008, Gates left his day job at Microsoft to devote more time to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, although he continued as chairman of the board and advisor on key projects.

The decision reflected his desire to focus on global challenges in health and education, which he saw as an opportunity to make significant philanthropic contributions.

Finally, on March 13, 2020, Bill Gates announced his resignation from the board of directors of Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway to devote more time to his philanthropic efforts.
