RALEIGH, N.C. — Leadership burnout across Corporate America may be driven by a deeper issue than excessive workloads or long hours, according to business strategist Glenn Llopis, who says many executives are struggling with a lack of conviction rather than a lack of capability.
Llopis, an author and leadership advisor, is bringing that message to business leaders through his new book, Earning Conviction: The Practice That Redirects Leaders from Exhausted to Unshakable. The book explores what he describes as a growing “conviction crisis” among professionals who have achieved significant career success yet continue to experience exhaustion, uncertainty, and difficulty adapting to change.
The issue, Llopis argues, is not a shortage of talent or expertise. Instead, he believes many leaders spend considerable energy maintaining appearances and projecting confidence, even when they are disconnected from their own values and sense of purpose.
“Our most capable leaders burn out, not because they are working too hard, but because they are pretending too much,” Llopis said. “We have built a generation of leaders who perform confidence they do not feel and fight to sustain change against systems designed to prevent it. And then we wonder why our most capable people are the most burned out and unprepared to reinvent themselves.”
The concept forms the foundation of Llopis’ latest work, which seeks to challenge conventional leadership development approaches that emphasize confidence, achievement, and performance metrics. According to the author, those qualities alone are insufficient for sustaining long-term leadership effectiveness in rapidly changing business environments.
Llopis contends that conviction is often misunderstood or overlooked despite its importance in decision-making, resilience, and organizational leadership. He describes conviction as a quality that must be earned through experience, self-awareness, and consistent action rather than adopted as a leadership style or personality trait.
“Capability is not conviction,” Llopis said. “Competence is what you perform; conviction is the earned capability to sustain who you are when every force pulls you back — and you cannot fake it or demand it.”
The book presents 101 leadership “redirects” designed to help readers evaluate their mindset, behaviors, and professional choices. Drawing on decades of experience working with executives and organizational leaders, Llopis aims to provide practical guidance for individuals seeking to strengthen their leadership foundation while navigating personal and professional challenges.
The release comes at a time when many organizations continue to focus on employee well-being, leadership resilience, and workplace engagement. Business leaders have increasingly been asked to manage change, uncertainty, and workforce expectations while maintaining performance and productivity. Against that backdrop, Llopis argues that leadership sustainability requires a deeper commitment to personal growth and authenticity.
