At 29, the American Hayley Arceneaux will meet two milestones: she will become the youngest American to fly into space and will be part of the first space mission composed entirely of civilians.
Arceneaux will be part of the Inspiration 4 mission, the first commercial flight of the aerospace company SpaceX.
The trip will be financed by millionaire Jared Isaacman, who bought the four available spots on the Crew Dragon ship. Isaacman reserved one of the four seats for himself, but donated the other three.
In order to symbolize hope, one of the spaces was destined for a front-line worker at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis (United States).
And, as revealed New York Times, the chosen one is Hayley Arceneaux, a medical assistant at the hospital specializing in the care of children with diseases such as leukemia and other cancers.
Overcoming
In 2002, Arceneaux was treated at the same facility for bone cancer. He now has metal rods in place of some of the bones in his left leg. In this way, you will also be the first person with a prosthesis to go into space.
Arceneaux still has the occasional limp and pain, a condition that could disqualify her from becoming an astronaut. However, she was cleared by SpaceX to serve as a crew medical officer.
“My battle with cancer really prepared me for space travel. It made me tough, and I also think it really taught me to expect the unexpected and move on, “said the young woman in a statement to the Associated Press.
Isaacman said Hayley is a perfect fit for the civilian spaceflight team. “This is supposed to be an inspiring message of what we can achieve here on Earth,” he said.
Liftoff for the Inspiration4 mission from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is scheduled for October 2020, and the orbit will last two to four days.
Isaacman will reveal the other space tourists in March. One will be chosen through a contest sponsored by your company Shift4 and another will be awarded to the winner of a St. Jude’s Hospital drawing.
