They concentrated on the rectory in the University District and then marched toward the Government Palace, where 60 postgraduate programs would be left unfunded. They started their journey at exactly two o’clock in the afternoon.
At about 2:30 in the afternoon, they reached the historic center of the city, where they blocked Juan de la Luz Enriquez Street, to demand that the state authorities and the university defend the science and technology budget.
They criticized that Conahcit reduced the number of available scholarships and risked leaving more than 300 master’s, major or doctoral students without encouragement.
“We deplore that Conahcyt did not provide clear or timely information about the new classification or assessment processes graduate students must follow. Nor were programs given sufficient time to adjust to the new rules before making the cut.
Members of the university community are upset that the UV has not taken a position on the matter and appears to be negligent in defending the student body.
“Education is a right, not a privilege!” declared the young people and teachers who took part in the mobilization on Thursday August 24 in the capital of Veracruz.
UV is also not aware of Conahcyt’s criteria for ranking priority graduate courses, and scholarship options for programs related to nutrition science or sustainability are uncertain.
Some of their banners read: “Without knowledge there is no progress,” “Enough political strikes, knowledge is not cut off, it is protected,” “Students are united, never defeated,” and “Cut the budget, cut my career.”
