Last Thursday, the government of the Cayman Islands returned four irregular migrants to the Republic of Cuba. Antilles’ largest Ministry of the Interior (MININT) reported that 83 Cubans were repatriated in 2023. Citizens of the Caribbean island arrived at the José Martí International Airport in Havana. The deportation is the ninth this year, MININT said.
In the last days of May, Cayman Islands (CBC) Customs and Border Protection officials commented on the transfer of 4 Cubans. Cayman Airways carried out the maneuver to repatriate these Cuban natives.
Detention centers have poor conditions
Three months ago, the Cayman Islands government announced that the facility for captured migrants would be expanded. This step was taken to increase the reception capacity of Cubans seeking asylum.
Many of these migrants said they were overwhelmed. In recent months, the islands, which are dependent on the United Kingdom, have detained several dangerous boats carrying migrants from Cuba.
On March 3, 2023, 12 people living in the Cuban archipelago were detained and then taken to Boden Town Transit Center. The dozen migrants stayed in rented houses and were monitored by customs police using digital cameras.
Many citizens from this group responded that officers did not provide an explanation when they were brought to the facility. They also said that the place lacked basic living facilities.
The Cayman Islands began deporting Cubans 24 months after the coronavirus hit. In addition, there is evidence that the exodus increased due to Cuba’s economic problems. The government of the Cayman Islands promised that Cubans would be cared for in accordance with international laws and would be given personal service.
