The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Wewoka Indian Health Service Center will host a free disability claims and health care outreach event in Seminole, Oklahoma, aimed at helping Veterans and surviving spouses determine whether they qualify for federal benefits related to military service and toxic exposure.

The event, titled “Your Service. Our Mission: Bringing VA Benefits Home,” will take place Friday, September 11, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bridge First Baptist Church, 420 Reid Street in Seminole. Lunch will be provided at no cost.

Veterans, their spouses and surviving spouses of Veterans are invited to participate, with on-site assistance available for disability claims, VA health care enrollment and toxic exposure screenings.

PACT Act Event to Provide Disability Claims Assistance

Veteran Service Officers will be available to help attendees complete VA disability claim paperwork. The outreach will focus particularly on Veterans who may have presumptive disabilities connected to their military service.

A presumptive disability is a medical condition that the VA presumes is related to military service, even when it develops after a Veteran has been discharged. Veterans who meet applicable eligibility requirements may qualify for disability compensation and other benefits.

VA personnel will also conduct toxic exposure screenings and provide replacement identification cards for Veterans whose VA ID cards have expired.

The outreach is designed to bring several services together in one location, allowing Veterans and their families to receive information about eligibility and begin claims or health care enrollment procedures.

Federal, State and Tribal Organizations to Participate

Representatives from the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System, Muskogee VA Regional Office, Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs, local Vet Centers, Tribal and Indian Health Service programs and nonprofit partners are expected to participate.

Representatives will be available to answer questions about disability compensation, health care and other programs. VA health care personnel will conduct toxic exposure screenings and help eligible Veterans enroll in VA health care.

The participation of multiple agencies and organizations is intended to give Veterans and their families access to claims, health care and benefits assistance at a single community event.

PACT Act Expanded Benefits for Toxic Exposure

The outreach is part of continued implementation of the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act of 2022, commonly known as the PACT Act.

The federal law expanded VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange and other toxic substances during military service. It enables the VA to provide additional generations of Veterans and their survivors with access to health care and benefits related to qualifying exposures.

Presumptive conditions are particularly significant because the VA recognizes certain illnesses as connected to military service under specified circumstances, including cases where symptoms or diagnoses emerge after discharge.

This approach can affect a Veteran’s eligibility for disability compensation and related services.

Surviving Spouses May Also Qualify for Benefits

The outreach is not limited to Veterans. Spouses and surviving spouses are encouraged to attend because they may also qualify for benefits based on a Veteran’s military service and medical history.

Surviving spouses may be eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation if a Veteran died from a presumptive condition.

Officials are encouraging families who are uncertain about their eligibility to speak with representatives at the event and learn what documentation may be required to pursue a claim.

Veterans Encouraged to Bring Supporting Records

Veterans attending the event are encouraged to bring relevant documentation when available to assist service officers with evaluating and preparing claims.

Recommended documents include medical records or other medical evidence, such as physician and hospital reports, along with records containing historical or military information relevant to the disability being claimed.

Veterans are also encouraged to bring discharge or separation papers, including a DD-214 or equivalent documentation.

Widows and dependents seeking assistance should bring applicable records when available, including marriage certificates, death certificates and children’s birth certificates.

VA Continues Outreach to Tribal Communities

Throughout 2026, the VA is continuing a nationwide outreach campaign conducted in collaboration with more than 30 Tribal communities.

The initiative is intended to reach Veterans, spouses and surviving spouses who may not previously have accessed benefits or health care services for which they could be eligible.

By bringing federal, state, Tribal and nonprofit representatives together, the Seminole outreach effort seeks to reduce barriers to accessing disability claims assistance, toxic exposure screenings and VA health care enrollment.
