Josefin Santiago Hernández, a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mayaguez campus (RUM), was selected as one of the seven star interns, out of a group of 100 interns who participated in an internship at the Johnson Space Center during the summer. United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
A young woman from Moga is the only Puerto Rican to receive this recognition for her summer experience aimed at supporting the International Space Station (ISS) program.
“It is an honor to represent the College of Mayaguez and Puerto Rico at such a significant institution in the history of space exploration, and an honor to serve as a representative for Latina women in STEM,” said Santiago.
During the day, he worked as a computer engineer in computer and software security within the computer security and software assurance branch under the student security and work assurance.
“In my rotation, within the agency, I was certified to perform safety reviews for computer-based control systems, 'inside payloads' and in vehicles to the ISS. I dedicated myself to verifying that these technologies meet security requirements. These review processes are critical to guaranteeing the safety of the ISS and the astronauts on board,” explained Yosefine, who is pursuing a second internship rotation this semester at NASA-JCS in Houston, Texas.
