(CNN Spanish) –– Peru's government has dismissed Lt. Gen. Jorge Luis Angulo Tejada as general commander of the National Police after it deemed him “grossly negligent” in the organization's control and leadership, the executive announced in a resolution published in the official gazette.
“The most serious indifference in the control and command of the police force by the current general commander of the National Police of Peru is evident, which constitutes incompatibility and unfitness to exercise the position, thus necessitating the termination of the appointment.” , says the document.
CNN tried to reach the fired commander by phone and email, but has not yet heard back.
The resolution argues that despite the declaration of emergency in the country, crime has not decreased. For this reason, he points out, it is necessary to make changes “to reverse this situation in order to better plan and implement the operational plans of the National Police”.
In September last year, the administration declared a state of emergency in three districts, two in Lima and one in Piura, arguing that the move was necessary to fight crime.
In another resolution published this Monday, the government of Dina Boluarte announced that Lt. Gen. Victor José Janabria Angulo will take over as commander of the National Police.
