U.S. Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, said the angry mob that attacked the Capitol building on Jan. 6 “provoked” President Donald Trump with his lies. CNBC.

McConnell was the first high-ranking Republican to recognize the role of the current U.S. president in the attack on Congress. In fact, his statement is important, especially for McConnell, the person who could mark the scales in support of Trump’s sentencing in the coming days.

“When we last met the Senate, I recovered the Capitol from the violent criminals who tried to stop us from doing our duty. The meeting was lied to. They were instigated by the President and other powerful people,” McConnell told the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

Magnoll rejected Democrats’ demands that Trump arrange for his removal before dismissal, arguing that there was not enough time to streamline fair and appropriate legal procedures. However, in talks with his Republican counterparts, McConnell said it had not yet been decided whether to support Trump’s sentence. McConnell, the most influential Republican in the Senate, said according to party sources, a positive response from him would be enough to get a large number of Republicans to line up.

Trump was indicted by the House of Representatives just days after the Capitol attack for inciting the uprising and is the first U.S. president to be twice indicted.

McConnell’s successor Chuck Schumer has announced that if the Senate votes to condemn Trump, there will be an immediate vote to ban the former presidential candidate. To condemn Trump, two-thirds of the senators needed a simple vote of 67, or a simple 50 + 1 majority to block the candidacy. After Georgia’s by-election to the Senate, Democrats have a 50-50 technical majority, with a decisive vote of future Vice President Harris.
