Following several rumors, a source told MLB.com’s John Paul Morosi on Sunday night that Max Scherzer and the Mets are close to reaching a multi-season deal. The committee did not confirm the report.

The 37-year-old Scherzer is a free agent for the first time since signing a seven-year $ 210 million contract with the Nationals after the 2014 season.

The right-hander won two Sy Young Awards and a World Series in Washington, pitched two hitless games and a 20-strikeout game, and recorded a 2.75 era with 1,699 strikeouts in 1,297 innings. Scherzer finished in the top five in the Sy Young vote in six of those seven years, including third place in 2021.

The Missouri native is one of 10 pitchers with three Sai Young awards. The exclusive team includes Hall of Famers such as Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, Greg Maddox, Sandy Coofox, Tom Sever, Jim Palmer and Pedro Martinez.

Scherzer received the 3,000th strikeout of his career on September 12, becoming the 19th member of the club.

Scherzer traded for the Dodgers in mid-2021 and continued his dominance in Los Angeles, recording a 7-0 record for the Dodgers with 1.98 ERA in 68.1 innings, 89 strikeouts and just eight walks. Overall, Scherzer released 2.46 epochs and 0.86 WHIP, career best records.

After Arizona picked him up in the 11th overall test until 2006, Scherzer began his path in professional baseball with T-bags. After two seasons with the T-Box, he traded with the Tigers with the T-Box in December. The Yankees also featured in December 2009.

Scherzer became an ace in Detroit, helping the Tigers reach the 2012 World Series and winning his first Psy Young the following year.
