Lionel Fernandez to discuss Latin American future with other former presidents at global forum

The four former presidents of Latin American countries, heads of regional organizations and various academics and experts will discuss the future of the region starting Thursday in the third edition of the Global Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean to be held in New York.

The forum, which will hold its debates next Thursday and Friday, will bring together former presidents Lionel Fernandez from the Dominican Republic; Ricardo Lagos of Chile; Ernesto Chamberlain of Colombia and Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica.

Former presidents Louis Almacro, secretary-general of the Organization of American States, and Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), will share the agenda. With a team of leading experts.

Lionel Fernandez, the three-time President of the Dominican Republic, inaugurates the forum and participates in several panels, the purpose of which is to promote pluralism, where thinkers, researchers, academics, politicians and key actors will discuss the region and the world and the impact on the population.

“This forum is more important today than ever before, because the situation in the region will be analyzed for the first time during the Govt. Strengthens its position, “Fernandez said in a statement.

Key discussions will revolve around the economic and social consequences of the Latin American epidemic and the challenges associated with this crisis and the growing financial pressures affecting the public accounts of many countries in the region in particular.

It will address the electoral cycle that begins in the region in 2022, with elections in Costa Rica, Colombia and Brazil this year, and Chile is expected to hold a referendum to ratify a new constitution.

In another panel, in which the participation of Louis Almacro is expected, the mechanisms of solidarity and regional cooperation will be discussed; The four former presidents will conclude a two-day meeting looking at the future of Latin America in a global context.

The forum is hosted by the Lionel Fernandez-led Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) and its sister organization in the United States, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).

It is organized by the International Organization for Democratic and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and is attended by its General Secretary Kevin Casas-Zamora and its Regional Director Daniel Sowato.

Other organizations, such as ECLAC and the Institute for Latin American Studies (ILAS) at Columbia University, are participating as collaborators.

The first editions of the Global Forum were held in New York in 2018 and 2019, but could not be held next year due to epidemics.

This third edition will take place live, although all six of its panels will be broadcast live on corporate social networks.
