Organized by Oceanographic Magazine, the competition seeks to highlight the beauty of the ocean and the seriousness of the threats it faces.

A new category has been added for the first time in the competition, Female Fifth Pathom Award, A special commendation that inspires women in the field of marine photography. The award went to Los Angeles-based photographer and biology author Renee Kaposola.
Here we see a collection of his vast pictures of a black-spotted rock shark parading its back paddle as the sun sets over French Polynesia.
Hannah Le Liu won the Young Ocean Photographer Award for this photo of a green sea turtle emerging from the water to breathe, under the sky inhabited by hungry birds on the island of Heron in Australia.

The winning photos will be on display along the River Thames in London until October 17.
