Oregon State freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree has been named the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week after delivering a breakout performance against Texas Tech, highlighting his potential to become an important part of the Beavers’ offense during the 2026 college football season.

Legree recorded eight receptions for 240 yards and two touchdowns against the Red Raiders, averaging an impressive 30.0 yards per catch. His performance demonstrated an ability to create explosive plays and provide Oregon State with a significant vertical threat in the passing game.

The Maxwell Football Club recognizes an outstanding college freshman each week during the 2026 season through the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week award. Players are evaluated for their overall performances on offense, defense or special teams and do not need to appear on the Shaun Alexander Award preseason watch list to be considered.

Legree Breaks Out Against Texas Tech

Legree emerged as one of Oregon State’s most productive offensive players in the matchup with Texas Tech, consistently creating opportunities against the Red Raiders’ secondary.

His eight catches produced 240 receiving yards, while two receptions resulted in touchdowns. His average of 30.0 yards per reception reflected the explosive nature of his performance and his ability to generate significant yardage whenever Oregon State targeted him.

Legree repeatedly challenged Texas Tech’s coverage downfield. His speed gave the Beavers an opportunity to stretch the defense vertically, while his ability to turn short and intermediate routes into larger gains added another dimension to the passing attack.

The freshman’s combination of speed and ball skills also created challenges for the Texas Tech secondary. His ability to threaten deeper areas of the field could help create additional space for Oregon State’s other receivers and offensive players as the season progresses.

Freshman Makes Immediate Impact for Oregon State

Legree’s performance was particularly notable because it came early in his college career. Freshmen can face significant adjustments when transitioning to the collegiate level, including faster defenses and more complex coverage schemes.

Against Texas Tech, however, Legree demonstrated that he could make an immediate offensive contribution.

Producing 240 receiving yards in a single game provided an early indication of his potential role within Oregon State’s offense. His ability to make plays at multiple levels of the field could make him an increasingly important target as the Beavers move through their 2026 schedule.

The performance also gives Oregon State another potential playmaker capable of changing field position quickly. Receivers who consistently threaten defenses deep can influence how opposing teams structure their coverage, potentially creating opportunities elsewhere in the offense.

Maxwell Football Club Recognizes Freshman Talent

The Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week award is presented throughout the college football season to recognize outstanding performances from first-year players.

The Maxwell Football Club considers contributions across offense, defense and special teams when selecting weekly recipients. The process is not restricted to players previously included on the Shaun Alexander Award preseason watch list, providing freshmen across college football with an opportunity to earn recognition based on their performances during the season.

The weekly honor is associated with the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, which recognizes emerging players making significant contributions at the collegiate level.

For Legree, the weekly recognition adds national attention to a performance that established him as an early player to watch for Oregon State.

His eight receptions, 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns against Texas Tech represent a strong start to his college career. More importantly for the Beavers, his ability to stretch the field and create explosive plays could provide Oregon State with an additional offensive weapon as the 2026 season develops.
