PROSPERITY, S.C. — A U.S. Navy veteran and former independent congressional candidate has released an updated edition of his book examining constitutional governance, congressional authority and presidential war powers as the United States confronts questions arising from the recent conflict with Iran.

Mike Bedenbaugh, author of Reviving Our Republic: 95 Theses for the Future of America, has expanded the book to address contemporary debates over military intervention and the constitutional balance of power between Congress and the executive branch. The new edition also features a redesigned cover and uses the Iran conflict as a case study for examining broader questions about U.S. foreign policy and representative government.

Iran Conflict Brings Renewed Focus to Constitutional War Powers

The updated book centers on questions that have long shaped debates over American military action, including who has the authority to take the country to war, the role Congress should play in such decisions and how the federal government can protect national security while preserving constitutional limits.

“The debate over Iran is really a debate about the Constitution,” Bedenbaugh said. “The Founders anticipated these challenges and created a system designed to prevent the concentration of power while preserving both liberty and national security.”

Debates over presidential and congressional war powers have remained a recurring feature of U.S. foreign policy, particularly when military operations develop rapidly or occur without a formal declaration of war. Bedenbaugh’s revised work places those questions within a broader examination of constitutional government.

Military Experience Shapes Author’s Perspective

Bedenbaugh previously served as a U.S. Navy Quartermaster aboard the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser USS South Carolina (CGN-37). His book draws on that military background alongside historical material including the U.S. Constitution, the Federalist Papers and George Washington’s Farewell Address.

The original edition of Reviving Our Republic was published in 2024 as a platform connected with Bedenbaugh’s independent campaign for Congress.

The book presented 95 theses and more than 40 proposed reforms addressing representative government, political accountability, civic participation and the concentration of political and corporate influence.

The revised edition retains those themes while adding material that considers the recent Iran conflict through the framework of constitutional governance and foreign policy.

Book Outlines Proposals for Government Reform

Among the issues addressed in the book are proposals designed to increase citizen participation and strengthen representative government. Bedenbaugh also examines ways to reduce concentrated political and corporate influence and considers how authority should be divided among federal, state and local governments.

Fiscal responsibility and the country’s long-term financial sustainability are additional areas of focus.

The updated edition also establishes a constitutional framework through which Bedenbaugh argues Americans can evaluate military interventions, foreign alliances and the use of war powers.

Rather than framing the book around a single political party or candidate, Bedenbaugh presents its arguments as a broader examination of the institutions and principles underlying the U.S. system of government.

“Too much of our politics is focused on personalities,” Bedenbaugh said. “The future of the Republic depends on whether citizens are willing to place principles and long-term national interests ahead of temporary political victories.”

Updated Edition Arrives During a Symbolic Year for the United States

The new edition also includes a redesigned cover inspired by Benjamin Franklin, whose involvement in the nation’s founding and emphasis on civic responsibility have remained enduring symbols of the American experiment in self-government.

Its release comes as the United States marks its 250th anniversary and moves toward the midterm elections, placing questions about government accountability, political representation and executive authority in an increasingly prominent national context.

Bedenbaugh says he hopes the revised book will encourage readers across the political spectrum to examine the country’s governing principles rather than approaching constitutional questions exclusively through partisan politics.

By connecting historical arguments about checks and balances with current debates surrounding Iran and presidential war powers, the updated Reviving Our Republic seeks to place contemporary foreign-policy decisions within a larger discussion about congressional authority, civic responsibility and the future of representative government in the United States.
