Mercury Insurance Urges Vigilance as Post-Storm Risks Persist for US Property Owners

As communities across the United States begin to clear up after a weekend marked by snow, ice and freezing temperatures, Mercury Insurance is urging homeowners and businesses to remain on high alert, warning that the period after a winter storm can pose some of the most serious risks to property.

Although the immediate impact of severe winter weather may have passed, insurers say the days that follow are often when damage emerges. Rising and falling temperatures can place significant stress on buildings and infrastructure, increasing the likelihood of frozen pipes cracking as they thaw, snow accumulation weakening structures, and ventilation systems becoming obstructed.

Mercury Insurance, which operates across multiple US states, says interior water damage remains one of the most frequent and expensive causes of insurance claims nationwide, particularly after freeze events. The insurer is encouraging property owners to take simple but proactive steps to reduce the likelihood of minor issues escalating into major and costly disruptions.

“Recovery doesn’t end when the snow stops falling,” said Bonnie Lee, VP, Property Claims at Mercury Insurance. “Taking a few proactive steps now can help prevent minor issues from turning into major disruptions for families and businesses.”

Temperature swings create hidden dangers

Insurance specialists note that frozen pipes are a particular concern during post-storm recovery. While a pipe may appear intact during freezing conditions, pressure caused by ice blockages can lead to cracks that only become apparent once temperatures rise. Leaks can then spread unnoticed behind walls, ceilings or in attics, causing extensive internal damage before they are detected.

Snow and ice can also create secondary hazards. Blocked furnace and dryer vents may restrict airflow, increasing fire risk or causing carbon monoxide to build up inside buildings. Heavy snow resting on roofs, garages and sheds can add significant weight, raising the risk of ice dams or structural stress.

In response, Mercury is sharing guidance developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), a US-based nonprofit organisation that conducts research aimed at reducing property losses through building science and real-world testing.

Practical steps to reduce post-storm damage

Based on IBHS’s Winter Ready recommendations, Mercury advises homeowners and business owners to familiarise themselves with the location of their main water shut-off valve, enabling a rapid response if a leak develops. Sudden changes in water pressure, reduced flow, or unexplained moisture on walls or floors can all be early warning signs that require immediate action and professional assistance.

Clearing snow promptly and safely is another priority. Walkways should be made accessible, while snow and ice around exhaust vents should be removed to ensure proper ventilation. Where snow has accumulated heavily on roofs or outbuildings, insurers recommend engaging licensed and bonded professionals to carry out removal, rather than attempting the work without proper equipment or training.

The use of portable generators during power outages also presents significant risks if handled incorrectly. Insurers continue to warn that generators must only be operated outdoors and positioned well away from doors and windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, a hazard that remains a leading cause of storm-related fatalities.

Documenting damage as soon as it is discovered can also speed up the recovery process. Photographs and video evidence taken early can assist insurance professionals in assessing claims and arranging repairs more efficiently.

Water damage remains a leading cause of claims

“Interior water damage often starts quietly — behind walls or in attics — and escalates quickly,” said Sarah Dillingham, Senior Meteorologist at IBHS. “Understanding where vulnerabilities exist and acting early can significantly reduce the likelihood and severity of damage as temperatures continue to fluctuate.”

Industry data consistently shows that interior water losses account for a substantial share of insurance claims each year, particularly following winter weather events. The risk is heightened when rapid temperature changes coincide with prolonged power failures, which can prevent heating systems from protecting vulnerable plumbing.

Mercury Insurance says that remaining vigilant in the days after winter weather is just as important as preparation beforehand. By focusing on prevention, safety and early intervention, property owners can limit disruption, reduce repair costs and speed up recovery once conditions begin to improve.

As weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, insurers expect post-storm awareness to play a growing role in protecting both residential and commercial properties from avoidable losses.
