In all aspects the situation in Cuba becomes more complicated every day. The crisis is pressing and above all, it is felt at the table of the majority of its residents.

Inflation is reaching unsuspected levels day by day, that’s why the prices of food items will go up as the year ends.

Every day many Cubans enter the “laboratory,” as the kitchen is known, to show off their innovative skills. The latest recipe, which is already going viral on the island, involves cooking rice without beans and coloring it with guava leaves. Unbelievable fact?

A Cuban woman proposed this alternative in a Facebook group.Cooking from the heart” and its users were struck by such a contribution to Creole culinary culture. Most opinions agree that “need compels,” as the popular saying goes.

Secret of Congress with guava leaves

A well-known social network user explains how he came up with the recipe. “I saw a recipe for banana water, mine is guava leaves. You should boil them until they get the characteristic color they give when cooked. Then reserve the water for normal preparation with all the necessary spices. I assure you that it is delicious and guava leaves have medicinal properties.”

Now, cooking rice with congeris is a real luxury in Cuba. A pound of beans costs $500.00 CUP and a pound of rice costs $170.00 CUP. If we add what we have to spend on seasonings, a serving of the popular traditional dish comes to roughly $600.00 per cup.

A few days ago, another alternative recipe appeared in Cuban cuisine. One family decided to make a “ropa vija” dish, not with beef, but with banana skins or roasted cassava skins.
