Every day many Cubans enter the “laboratory,” as the kitchen is known, to show off their innovative skills. The latest recipe, which is already going viral on the island, involves cooking rice without beans and coloring it with guava leaves. Unbelievable fact?

Secret of Congress with guava leaves

A well-known social network user explains how he came up with the recipe. “I saw a recipe for banana water, mine is guava leaves. You should boil them until they get the characteristic color they give when cooked. Then reserve the water for normal preparation with all the necessary spices. Now, cooking rice with congeris is a real luxury in Cuba. A pound of beans costs $500.00 CUP and a pound of rice costs $170.00 CUP. If we add what we have to spend on seasonings, a serving of the popular traditional dish comes to roughly $600.00 per cup.

A few days ago, another alternative recipe appeared in Cuban cuisine. One family decided to make a “ropa vija” dish, not with beef, but with banana skins or roasted cassava skins.
