Representative Jesus Manuel Ortiz He announced this morning that he will seek the leadership of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD).

The election has been announced on February 26, 2023. Currently, the leader of the PPD is the President of the Senate, José Luis Talmão.

Ortiz confirmed that he made the decision after talking with members of the PPD site for about a year.

He argued that he could implement a restructuring plan to moderate society for the time being. The legislator announced his decision through a broadcast through social networks.

“I have decided to lead the PPD and lead a serious and structured process of renewing our structure and our priorities. The PPD must reinvigorate itself and resume the defense of the causes that identify us as a party”Ortiz said in written statements.

He added, “It is time to prepare ourselves to implement a serious and smart restructuring plan, work on an institutional government plan, confront the questionable electoral law, induct new talent and work together in unity of purpose. It is up to us to consolidate, renew, recruit and act.

“In the coming months, the People’s Democratic Party must lay the foundations that will allow it to be a viable party to win the elections in 2024. A year ago I started talking to the base of the PPD and comrades from other parties. Across the island, in neighborhoods, marquees, community centers or some residences in Puerto Rico. “That conversation allowed me to know first-hand the concerns, discomforts and views of our people. It was as a result of these meetings that I decided to take up the leadership of my party. I call on the public to participate in this important process with unity and unwavering commitment of those who do their duty,” he said.

Hours later, 14 delegates announced their support for Ortiz’s candidacy.

“The PPD must pick up momentum towards the 2024 elections. It is imperative to start a serious restructuring process, establish a clear message to the base and the country, identify a leadership ready to work and hire the best talent to build a government plan that is effective and realistic.The team said in written statements to the press.
