Within the framework of the World Science Day for Peace and Development, Industrias Peñoles and Fresnillo plc recognize the importance of promoting scientific research as a trigger for sustainable and cutting-edge mining. And it is that this tool contributes to a better understanding of the world and its transformation for the benefit of societies.

In this sense, Rafael Rebollar, general director of Industrias Peñoles, specified that the company has always encouraged interest in science in children and young people in Mexico through emblematic initiatives such as the international competition FIRST Robotics, in which 23 teams sponsored by both mining companies participate.

For his part, Octavio Alvídrez, CEO of Fresnillo plc, highlighted that there is also close collaboration with the Innovation Association in Science Teaching (Innovec) in order to promote quality science education based on modules such as: “Rocas y Minerales” and, recently, of the COSIP series (Community of Superinvestigators of the Planet), which aims to show families how to take care of themselves against Covid-19.

In addition to this, Industrias Peñoles and Fresnillo plc, have the Laguna del Rey Technical Studies Center (CETLAR) and the Technical Studies Center (CETEF), located in Coahuila and Zacatecas, respectively, where students develop human and technical skills , administrative and business culture, as well as youth volunteering in the communities. In total, 1,200 students have graduated (766 from Peñoles and 97 from Fresnillo plc).

In addition to these actions, both companies continue to move towards a more intelligent mining based on science and the adaptation of new technologies to facilitate processes, train and care for miners, among them the personnel location system with the device stands out. take out the key Inside the mine in the Tizapa, Velardeña, Sabinas and Capela units.

It should be noted that both Industrias Peñoles and Fresnillo plc implement Fatigue monitoring, which supervises the microsleep of operators with alarms in case of danger. In addition to this, artificial intelligence has been implemented for many of the processes, for example, next-generation extraction, as well as tools for machine learning, Big Data analytics and integrated sensors. There are also biometric facial recognition readers, which measure body temperature and speed up the safe entry of employees to work areas.

In the particular case of Peñoles, the mining company carries out VR training, which consists of training through virtual reality simulators, while Minera Fresnillo has adopted the use of real-time monitoring technology and surveillance cameras. In addition, it was recently announced that by February 2022, Peñoles will launch the “life vest” that will be worn by personnel with hypertension and / or diabetes in order to monitor their health status and respond in a timely manner in case of presenting any condition that put them at risk. This measure is the first of its kind to be carried out in Mexico and in the sector.

With all these actions, Industrias Peñoles and Fresnillo plc reiterate their interest and passion for science and technological innovation as an ally to continue being a benchmark for sustainable mining, but above all to respond to any challenge with comprehensive and innovative solutions.
