Giamatte confirms that the protesters belong to “shock groups” and will seek arrest warrants against them.

(CNN Spanish) — Outgoing Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammatte announced on Monday that his government would seek arrest warrants against some of the dissidents leading protests and blockades in the country, displeased with the Public Ministry’s raids on top election facilities. Tribunal (TSE).

In a message broadcast on national television, Giammattei pointed out that many of the protesters belonged to “shock groups” and added that “actions outside the rules of law will no longer be tolerated: blockades are illegal.”

The President insisted that these people were not peaceful protesters, but ironically, they were demonstrators in favor of peace and democracy. They are pre-organized and trained shock squads and as we have already identified many of them, we will seek the relevant arrest warrant to administer justice through due process.”

Giammattei assured that the transition was certain and that Bernardo Arevalo would take power on January 14, 2024 – as provided by Guatemalan law – and therefore called on those maintaining the blockades to “reflect”.

“I have heard from those who are instigating the blockades that they cannot govern like this, that Guatemala is not going to progress by secession. “It’s time for good Guatemalans to raise our voices so this can stop,” he said.

Giamatte’s news comes a day before the Permanent Council of American States (OAS) meets to discuss the political crisis in the Central American country.
