Social media platform X said this Saturday that it was closing its operations in Brazil “with immediate effect” due to “censorship orders” by Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes.
Elon Musk-owned X claims Moraes secretly threatened to arrest one of the company's legal representatives if it did not comply with court orders to remove certain content from its site.
The social media giant posted images of a document allegedly signed by Moraes stating he would be fined 20,000 reais ($3,653) a day.
He also issued an arrest warrant against X's representative, Rachel Nova Conceição, if the platform did not fully comply with Moraes' orders.
“To protect the safety of our employees, we have made the decision to close our operations in Brazil, effective immediately,” X said.
Brazil's Supreme Court asked X to remove certain content
Brazil's Supreme Federal Court, where Moraes sits, told Reuters it could not rule on the matter.
Service X continues to be available to Brazilians, the site said on Saturday.
Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block certain accounts while he investigates so-called “digital militants” accused of spreading fake news.
Moraes launched an investigation against the billionaire earlier this year after Musk said he was reactivating accounts at X that a judge had ordered banned.
