Joe Biden and Donald Trump

WASHINGTON – US President Joe Biden's re-election looks far from over, according to a new poll showing him trailing former President Donald Trump in key states.

A Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll found Biden trailing Donald Trump in six of seven swing states, with most respondents seeing the economy worsen by the end of the year.

The results show Biden slightly behind the Republican nominee in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and widening his deficit in Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and North Carolina. Only the incumbent is ahead of Trump in Michigan.

Bloomberg highlighted that the results reverse a positive trend posted by Biden after his strong State of the Union address in March propelled the Democrat to his best results in the monthly survey since he began in October.

One of the reasons that explains the trend shift is voters' perception of the economy, which worries them the most in this election. Respondents offer a bleak view of the economy.

Most voters in swing states see economic conditions worsening in the coming months, with fewer than one in five expecting inflation and borrowing costs to remain low by the end of the year.

More than three-quarters of respondents said the president was responsible for the current state of the U.S. economy, and nearly half said he was “very responsible.”

“Some of the luster of the State of the Union address has faded,” said Matt Thincutt, senior director of Morning Consult. “People are really connecting their perception of Bitenomics and the economy to the inflation rate.”

To counter these negative views, the Biden administration has sought to remind voters of the country's economic recovery from the depths of the pandemic, while acknowledging that “there is still work to be done.”
