Transport Secretary Elaine Chao announced on Thursday that she was the first member of the cabinet to leave the administration following President Donald Trump’s response to a rally of supporters who attacked Capitol on Wednesday.
“It is an honor to serve the U.S. Department of Transportation,” he tweeted CNN, In a statement announcing his resignation.
Chao wrote that he would actually resign on Monday and that he was “extremely distressed” by events that could have been “completely avoided” in the chapter building.
“I am so proud of the many achievements we have made together for our country and I will never forget the commitment to this sector and to the United States,” C wrote.
He added that Transport Secretary-designated Pete Pattik would help take over the department.
Chao reportedly decided to resign after a revolt in the capital and the president’s response to it, a senior administration official said.
“Today, there have been many soul-searching and discussions,” the official said. “Obviously, that’s what needs to be done.” Chao’s decision to resign on Monday – not immediately – led to the officer deciding to allow his staff to make an organized departure and transfer to the new leadership.
Before deciding to resign, Chao consulted with his staff and her husband, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
