Jazz has been considered among the classical music for years, evident when second prize in the Permanent Competition of Musical Youth in Spain went to the Kukundé Quintet, made up of five students of the Escuela Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in 2020. The Quintet They’re Making Their Way in the Spanish jazz scene based on the individual quality, compositional and ensemble work they developed, which led them to release their first two albums.
His line of work, without excluding the adaptation of subjects well known to his membership, influences his individual creation, later postulated by the group. There were seven songs on display, which is the most mandatory final exhibition of all the components, given the high ambient temperature.
Among these songs we particularly liked: “Exploration”, by pianist Alex Duato, which begins quietly and melodically by itself, grows until it incorporates a growing quintet as well and resumes piano and drums, in keeping with a European rather than American type of sound. A sentimental tribute to a recently deceased colleague, the saxophone in a successful, intimate, and laborious introduction, to which the guitar is added, and the piano says goodbye as devotional and meek. The third in which is piano, double bass and drums, so rhythmic and in a pretty convolution, leads the quintet, so that the guitar, always under the protection of the varied drums, can best express the sound and language.
