Emanuela Orlandi was 15 when she disappeared on her way home from music class.
The Vatican remains unsolved in one of the city-state’s most neutral and mysterious disappearance cases that occurred nearly 40 years ago: the disappearance of young Emanuela Orlandi on June 22, 1983, while returning home from a flute lesson in Rome.
After several requests by Emanuela’s older brother Pietro, Vatican sources who have campaigned for years to solve the disappearance have confirmed to local media that authorities have reopened the investigation into the case, it was learned this Monday.
The news agency reported AdnkronosAll files, documents, reports, information and testimony related to the case will be re-examined, Vatican prosecutor Alessandro Titti said.
In addition, the investigation will focus on the case of Mirella Gregory, who was 15 when she disappeared in Rome weeks before Orlandi.
News of the reopening of the investigation is known months after Netflix’s premiere. “The cThe Girl from the Vatican”, Documentary exploring the theories surrounding the Orlandi case.
In 2019, as part of an investigation into the case, Vatican officials opened the graves of two 19th-century German princesses, although no evidence was found.

What happened to Emanuela?
On June 22, 1983, Emanuela was returning home after a flute class. He was last seen at a bus stop in the center of Rome.
A 15-year-old girl simply disappeared. After that no one saw her.
The Orlandi family lived in Vatican City, where the father worked as a layman in the papal household.

Emanuela’s family – which said it found out through the press on Monday that the investigation had reopened – had to pursue endless leads and rumours.
“Many tell me: forget it, enjoy your life, don’t think about it anymore,” declared Pietro Orlandi when the tombs reopened at the Vatican in 2019.
“But I can’t. I can’t rest until it’s over.”
