WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to choose a username for their account, which will act as a unique name and display by replacing the phone number in the contact information, similar to other similar platforms. telegram.

Currently, the WhatsApp account is associated with the users phone number, so the profile is identified based on this data. This makes the number visible to all users you interact with on the instant messaging site.

However, WhatsApp is working on a new feature through which users can choose a unique username for their account. They can use it to identify themselves to other users and add another layer of security. This way, there is no need to display the phone number.

This has been verified by WaBetaInfo through analysis of the latest beta version Share it For Android 2.23.11.15, the platform has started building this feature, although it is currently unknown.

This new functionality is found within the profile settings on WhatsApp and allows users to choose a username that will be coded and unique to that user.

The system is similar to that used in other similar platforms such as Telegram. This way, users can communicate with other users of the site by entering their username instead of their phone number.

Additionally, as WhatsApp makes clear in contact profile settings, the currently used name has a different use than the username. In the case of the new username feature, it helps identify the account, while the already used name is the name visible to contacts on the platform.

This feature is still under development. In addition, WaBetaInfo ensures that conversations initiated by usernames are protected with end-to-end encryption.
