Vlad Jr.’s HR leads Blue Jays to victory over Astros

HOUSTON — Matt Chapman homered to extend his start to the season and Chris Bassitt whitewashed the opposition in the seventh inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Houston Astros 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Bassitt (2-2) held the Astros in check for 6 1/3 innings. He allowed just three hits and a walk in a career that included five strikeouts.

34-year-old right-hander Jose Abreu didn’t give up the win until he singled with no outs in the fourth inning.

The performance marked a terrific comeback for Bassitt, who allowed 13 runs in 15 innings over his first three starts. He benefited from his team’s offensive support, which was absent in the previous two games.

Toronto hit two solo homers off Mexican starter Jose Urqudi (1-1) in the fourth. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his third home run of the season, hitting a fastball into the right-field seats over Kyle Tucker’s head.

Chapman followed with his fifth home run of the season.

For the Blue Jays, Dominican Guerrero had a run and an RBI in a 4-1 RBI win over Santiago Espinal, 3-1. 4-1 to Mexico’s Alejandro Kirk.

For the Astros, Honduran Mauricio Dubon scored a run in a 5-1 victory. Cuba’s Jordan Alvarez 3-1 with RBI, Jose Abreu 4-2. Dominican Jeremy Pena is 4-0. Puerto Rican Martin Maldonado is 3-0.
