According to a new study by seismologists at the University of California recently published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the area of the center, located in an area under the Indonesian Sea, is much larger than the area at the other end, just below Brazil.
For reasons still unknown, the planet’s solid iron inner core is growing “faster than one side” and “it began to freeze from molten iron 500 million years ago,” they explain in a statement. Presented by the University of California, Berkeley.
Impacts on the Earth’s magnetic field
In this sense, the east (left) side is more developed than the west: “Something below the center of the earth below Indonesia or outside removes heat from the inner center faster than the opposite side, below Brazil”. Thus, cooling faster than one side will accelerate the crystallization of the iron and the growth of the inner core.
As a result, it will have an impact on the planet’s magnetic field and its history, because “convection in the outer core, which is driven by the release of heat from the inner core, drives the dynamo that creates the magnetic field today, and we protect it from dangerous particles from the sun.”
