The City Council of Cuevas del Almanzora opens the doors of a new exhibition space at the Castillo del Marqués de Los Vélez next Saturday, October 9. “Fishing in Antiquity in Cuevas del Almanzora” is an exhibition space housed in the left room of the La Tercia building, a unit that was occupied until 2019 by an interpretation center dedicated to the Argaric town of Fuente Álamo.

After a comprehensive adequacy of the aforementioned room, which has been equipped with air conditioning, lighting and security systems, its contents and interpretive resources have been completely renovated. Both the reform works and the museum project have been directed by the architect Ismael Motos Díaz, who has mainly had the scientific advice of archaeologists Laura Larios Boqué, Oswaldo Arteaga Matute and José Luis López Castro.

Through the different areas that make it up, the visitor will have the opportunity to delve deeply into two stellar epochs of local prehistory and history: the Argar culture and Phoenician and Roman Baria.

The interpretive elements will share space with the showcases that contain a collection of archaeological pieces originals – amphorae, skylights, fuyasolas, coins, phitos … – from the Museum of Almería, to which are added those already existing in the old room.

It is significant to highlight the significance of the city of Baria, whose vestiges are currently partially hidden under the fishing district of Villaricos. One of the thematic areas of this space focuses on the industries associated with fishing in the old Baria, where a whole production system was developed around this activity and the export of its products.

And another of the exhibition areas, meanwhile, is intended to interpret in
exclusive the Argaric world, that culture that took hold in our territory during the Bronze Age (2200-1500 BC).

Finally, outside the room, the expository speech is completed with a route on the vestiges of ancient fishing activity in Villaricos in which interpretive panels have been arranged with access to virtual content.

This project, which has had a budget of 82,345 euros,
It is subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Junta de Andalucía with the participation of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (FEMP) (aid for projects under the participatory local development strategies of the Local Action Group of the Fishing Sector (GALP) Costa de Almería, 2018 call).
