It is one of the brightest cosmic events ever captured.

Scientists have revealed how US NASA instruments detected the brightest gamma-ray burst ever recorded.

A GRB burst occurred 2 billion light years from Earth And lit up most of our galaxy.

Images of the rare and powerful cosmic phenomenon show halos and patterns similar to “bull’s eye” target shooting.

Experts including academics from the University of Leicester in England, GRP 10 times brighter than previously detected.

They published a detailed analysis of the powerful explosion detected on October 9, 2022.

It was officially named GRB 221009A, but was called BOAT by those working on NASA’s Swift team.

“We are very lucky to see something like this. We appreciate such bright events Occurs once in 1,000 yearssaid Bill Evans, an X-ray astronomer who was involved in the mission.

“By studying the evolution of this amazingly bright GRB in great detail, we can learn a lot about the physics of a burst wave,” he continued.

“Just as slow-motion images reveal details about motions, breaking our data into smaller pieces allows us to see how GRBs change and learn more about them.”

The Swift team was initially unable to observe the explosion because Earth blocked its view with its Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a satellite telescope designed to study GRPs from space.

However, after 55 minutes, when the satellite’s orbit allowed the GRB to be clearly visible, its systems successfully detected it and captured its images.

What are Gamma Ray Bursts?

A gamma ray burst They are the most violent explosions in the universeIt emits more energy than the Sun emits in 10 billion years.

When massive stars die they are the result of catastrophic supernova explosions. Studies indicate that they occur when a black hole is formed by a more powerful type of supernova.

First this hole creates a magnetic field that controls the energy emission jets. Then, when this magnetic field is small, matter dominates these jets.

Previously, energy was thought to be governed by one of two things, but recent studies have shown that both the magnetic field and energy play a fundamental role.

A gamma ray burst.

Gamma-ray bursts are thought to occur when a massive star collapses, creating a black hole and ejecting particles outward at near the speed of light.

The first GRB was discovered by satellite in the late 1960s in an attempt to detect violations of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty by the Soviet Union.

Since then, thousands have been viewed by different tools.

Dr Andy Piedmore, who is part of the SWIFT team at the University of Leicester, said: “Not only are these patterns beautiful, they are also Scientifically useful“.

“We see a significant amount of dust in our galaxy illuminated by an intense burst of light from a GRB 2 billion light-years away, similar to a torch shining through a cloud,” he explained.

Experts, Beadmore continued, now have the opportunity to study the nature and composition of that dust detected at greater distances from the Sun.
