Over the past few decades, scientists have observed in astonishing detail that Earth's axis of rotation has undergone significant and disturbing changes. What once was Smooth movement towards southmoving from Towards the geographic North Pole and CanadaIt took an unexpected turn and started heading east.
Now, researchers have discovered that this surprising phenomenon is closely related human activities, In particular, the Excessive groundwater absorption.
A study A team of researchers from Seoul National University has revealed a strong correlation between groundwater abstraction and the drift of the Earth's axis. Water experts have long warned Adverse effects of overexploitation of ground water.
In affected areas droughts, as in the western United States, groundwater has become an important resource. However, even when water is removed from the land and not replaced to the same extent, land subsidence occurs. It not only damages houses and infrastructure Reduces soil capacity To retain water in the future.
He Dr. Ki-won Seo, a geophysicist and head of research at Seoul National University, was surprised by the results of his study. By demonstrating a strong connection between groundwater extraction and the shift in Earth's axis, Seo and his team A shocking and unexpected connection.
Seo described this finding as “Big surprise“, highlighting the importance of these human factors in the dynamics of our planet.
This discovery has also attracted the attention of other scientists and experts in the field. Matthew RodelScientist NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, He said that it is not surprising that groundwater extraction is causing damage Earth spins.
However, he was impressed by the researchers' ability to discover this relationship from the data. Accurate observations of polar motion are critical to understanding and predicting how it might evolve Earth's axis of rotation in the future.
It is also important to note that there is a change in the Earth's axis does not directly affect the seasons or daily life, has significant effects on satellite-based navigation systems. These systems are essential for guidance Airplanes, missiles and mapping applications depend on the accuracy of our planet's rotation.
Therefore, it is important to understand the factors affecting the movement of the Earth's axis to ensure the proper operation of these technologies.
This finding highlights the importance of considering human activities and their influence on our planet's natural systems. Over-absorption of groundwater is one thing In many ways our actions can have unexpected and significant consequences on the world in which we live.
As a society, we must be aware of these interactions and seek sustainable ways to harness them To preserve natural resources, sustainability and balance of our planet For future generations.
