President Miguel Diaz-Colonel will accept his post.

April 16, 2021 – 4:39 p.m.

This Friday, the VIII Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) began in Cuba, announcing that the resignation of Raul Castro from the post of First Secretary of the BCC, the highest office on the island, had already taken place.

“I conclude my work with the satisfaction of having accomplished as First Secretary (…) and with confidence in the future of the country and with the thought that the proposals to keep me in the higher echelons of the party system have not been accepted,” he said. When Castro presented his federal report to Congress, he acknowledged his declared desire to step down from all leadership positions in the organization, where he promised that he would remain a simple fighter until the day he died.

Amid the applause of the 300 delegates present at the meeting, 89-year-old Castro vowed that “nothing compelled him to make this decision” and that he did it to set a “precedent”.

He proposed accordingly AFP, A respectful conversation with the United States: “From this party conference I agree with the desire to cultivate a respectful dialogue and build a new kind of relationship with the United States … (without giving up) the principles of revolution and socialism.

In his last keynote address to the new democratic government of Joe Biden, he pointed out that “Cuba does not need to abandon” people’s self-determination “, a policy of its” foreign policy, committed to just cause “and” historical support for sister countries, “Venezuela.

Castro co-chaired the dissolution of the two countries with then-US President Barack Obama in 2014, ending half a century of strong conflict and reactivating diplomatic relations, which had been broken since 1961 and restored in 2015. However, the removal of Republican Donald Trump was the bulk of the progress between the two countries, and severely strengthened the embargo that had been in place since 1962.

Castro’s departure marks the retirement of other party members who were part of the so-called “history” of the revolution that fought to overthrow the then dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959, but he later turned to the socialist-communist current (where there were quarrels and clashes between pro-revolutionary groups, and so on). It maintains critiques on issues of independence as it is a state ruled by one party.

His departure will lead to a new generation led by 60-year-old President Miguel Diaz-Colonel.

In addition, the conference should determine what the country will do with the United States in the coming years, but also improve other internal issues such as the effects of the affected economic crisis and the growing Internet access on the island. (I)
