Poland activates planes after Russian attacks on western Ukraine and Kiev

(CNN) — Russia violated Polish airspace with a missile fired at targets in western Ukraine early Sunday, the operational command of the Polish armed forces said.

Poland said it had activated the plane on Sunday morning to ensure the “security” of its airspace after Russia launched missiles and drones against Ukraine's western Lviv region.

The operational command of the Polish Armed Forces said it was “monitoring tonight's intense long-range aviation activity of the Russian Federation, which is related to air and missile attacks against facilities located on Ukrainian territory.”

Several explosions were reported in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv after Ukrainian officials said Russia fired about 20 missiles and seven Shahed attack drones against the western part of Lviv near the border with Poland.

Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi said the missiles were aimed at critical infrastructure, but no strikes were reported in the city itself.

Operational Command X said Polish and allied aircraft were activated, “which may be associated with the appearance of increased noise levels, particularly in the southeastern part of the country.”

“All necessary procedures have been implemented to ensure the safety of Polish airspace,” the command added.

Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said in a telegram that there were a series of explosions in the Ukrainian capital and that missile fragments fell in the Desniansky district.

“Explosions in Capital. Air defenses are active. “Don't drop your stays,” Klitschko said.

He said that fire and rescue teams are on the way to the spot.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
