Okmulgee Regional Airport is preparing to begin construction on a new terminal building as part of a more than $2.5 million infrastructure investment designed to modernize the airport and support aviation, business and visitor activity in the Okmulgee region.

The City of Okmulgee, Okmulgee Regional Airport and the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 28 at the airport. Local officials, aviation leaders and community members are expected to participate as construction begins on the terminal and related infrastructure improvements.

The project carries a total investment of $2,502,775 and combines federal, state and local funding. Federal grant funding accounts for $602,775, while state grant funding provides $950,000. An additional $950,000 will come through local sponsor matching funds.

The funding structure reflects cooperation among the City of Okmulgee, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics as they invest in the long-term viability of Oklahoma’s community airport system.

Terminal Construction Includes Major Infrastructure Improvements

While the new terminal building is the centerpiece of the project, the investment extends to several supporting improvements intended to modernize airport operations and improve accessibility.

Plans include construction of a new asphalt parking lot and sidewalks, along with ADA-accessible improvements. The project will also provide water and sewer connections and electrical and gas services needed to support the terminal and surrounding airport facilities.

Additional work will include parking lot lighting, drainage infrastructure, pavement markings and new signage. Fencing and a motorized gate will also be installed as part of the broader development.

Together, the improvements are expected to create a more modern arrival point for pilots and visitors while upgrading infrastructure necessary for continued airport operations.

Federal, State and Local Funding Supports Airport Development

The nearly equal state and local contributions represent the largest individual portions of the financing package. The Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics is providing $950,000, matched by $950,000 from the local sponsor, while federal grant funding provides the remaining $602,775.

The investment is intended to strengthen the airport’s infrastructure and its ability to support aviation activity over the long term. Community airports can serve as transportation and economic assets for smaller cities, providing access for general aviation, business travel and visitors.

For Okmulgee, the new terminal is expected to function as a modern gateway for people arriving in the community by air. Improved airport facilities can also help accommodate aviation users and businesses that rely on general aviation transportation.

The project represents a broader effort to ensure that community airports have the infrastructure required to remain viable and useful to the regions they serve.

New Facility Designed to Support Okmulgee’s Economic Activity

Beyond aviation operations, the terminal project is positioned as an infrastructure investment that could support economic activity in the surrounding area.

Reliable aviation facilities can provide businesses with additional transportation options while making communities more accessible to investors, customers and other visitors. The supporting improvements included in the Okmulgee project are intended to provide the basic services, accessibility and security infrastructure needed for a modern airport terminal.

The partnership among federal, state and local entities also spreads the financial commitment across multiple levels of government, allowing the community to pursue a project valued at more than $2.5 million.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for Aug. 28

The ceremonial groundbreaking will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Okmulgee Regional Airport, located at 100 East Airport Road in Okmulgee.

State and local officials are expected to participate in the event, which will formally mark the beginning of construction. Architectural renderings of the new terminal will also be presented, offering a preview of the planned facility.

Representatives from the City of Okmulgee and the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics are expected to discuss the project and the federal, state and local investment supporting it.

Once completed, the new terminal and accompanying infrastructure improvements are expected to provide Okmulgee Regional Airport with updated facilities for pilots, visitors and businesses while reinforcing the airport’s role in the regional transportation network.

The $2,502,775 investment also highlights the continued use of federal, state and local partnerships to maintain and improve Oklahoma’s community aviation infrastructure.
