OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma officials are set to provide an update on the state’s Rural Health Transformation Program, highlighting early milestones, funding awards and investments aimed at strengthening health care services in rural communities.

Governor Kevin Stitt, Oklahoma Commissioner of Health Keith Reed and representatives from Southwestern Oklahoma State University will participate in a briefing on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. CST at the Jerry and Margaret Hodge Center for Pharmacy and Rural Health in Weatherford.

The briefing will focus on Oklahoma’s achievement as the recipient of the fifth-largest national award through the Rural Health Transformation Program, known as RHTP. Officials will also discuss milestones from the program’s first year and how investments are intended to benefit rural communities across the state.

SWOSU Projects Take Center Stage

Southwestern Oklahoma State University will be a major focus of the briefing, particularly its awards through RHTP’s Microgrant and Rural Regional Reorientation programs.

Kalie Kerth, PharmD, director of the SWOSU Rural Health Center, will join Stitt and Reed to provide information about the university’s involvement in the initiative and its work supporting rural health services.

SWOSU’s participation reflects the program’s broader effort to work with regional institutions that have direct connections to rural communities. The university’s health and pharmacy programs provide a foundation for initiatives focused on workforce development, health education and access to services in western Oklahoma and surrounding areas.

Hosting the briefing at the Jerry and Margaret Hodge Center for Pharmacy and Rural Health also places the discussion at a facility closely connected with SWOSU’s rural health activities.

Program Focuses on Rural Health Care Needs

The Rural Health Transformation Program is designed to direct investments toward communities facing challenges related to health care access, workforce availability and service capacity.

During the briefing, state officials are expected to outline how RHTP resources are being deployed and provide an assessment of progress during the program’s first year. The discussion will also focus on how individual investments are intended to produce longer-term benefits for rural residents.

The Microgrant program represents one component of that strategy, providing support for targeted initiatives. The Rural Regional Reorientation program is another part of the state’s approach to strengthening rural health systems and supporting organizations working directly in those communities.

Oklahoma’s receipt of the fifth-largest national award gives the state significant resources to pursue those objectives. The Weatherford briefing is expected to provide additional details about how funding is being distributed and how participating institutions are putting the investments into practice.

State and University Officials to Detail Progress

Stitt will provide the state administration’s perspective on the Rural Health Transformation Program, while Reed will represent the Oklahoma State Department of Health. Kerth will offer insight into SWOSU’s rural health work and the projects supported through the program.

The involvement of state government, public health officials and a regional university illustrates the partnership-based approach being used to address rural health challenges.

Rural communities can face distinct obstacles in maintaining access to physicians, pharmacists and other health professionals, particularly when populations are spread across large geographic areas. Investments in regional institutions can help expand local capacity while supporting efforts to develop and retain a health care workforce serving those areas.

The briefing will be held at the Jerry and Margaret Hodge Center for Pharmacy and Rural Health, located at 317 E. Davis Ave. in Weatherford. Reserved parking will be available in the first row of spaces closest to the building on the north side of the parking lot facing the Hodge Building.

The update will provide a closer look at how Oklahoma is using Rural Health Transformation Program funding, the progress achieved during its first year and the role SWOSU is expected to play as the state works to strengthen health care access and infrastructure across rural communities.
