Heat breaks records in Mexico

Mexico City.- During the third heat wave recorded in the country since June 1, various records for maximum temperatures have been broken, General Coordinator of the National Meteorological Service (SMN) Alejandra Méndez Giron said on Tuesday.

During the weekly session of the Technical Committee of Hydraulic Works (CTOOH), Méndez Girón said that the intensity and duration of the heat wave is considered abnormal, expected to last at least two days.

The average maximum temperature recorded across the country during this month rose to 34.8 degrees Celsius, up from 34.1 in 2019 and 33.5 in 2020.

Meanwhile, historical high temperature records were set in Tamaulipas, Ciudad Victoria with 47.4 degrees on June 19; 40.5 degrees in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on June 13; In Durango, Durango, it was 40.3 degrees on June 14, and 33.6 degrees on June 15 at the Dacubaya Observatory in Mexico City.

Tacubaya recorded an average June record of 31.1 degrees, 7.4 degrees higher than 2021.

Méndez Girón noted that the decrease in average temperature will be gradual.

“A high pressure system associated with a heat wave covering the entire country is expected to move northwest (…) fortunately there is an influx of moist air from the Pacific,” he said.

“The sensation of high temperatures will persist, but not as strongly as in recent days due to the entry of moisture.”

The official again warned that a high pressure system has delayed the presence of rain and other weather events, which were expected to be plentiful this month.

“There is a backlog in terms of almost a month’s worth of hurricane systems,” he said.

However, with the weakening of the high pressure system and the emergence of El Niño, rainfall is expected to resume from July onwards, Mendez Girone said.
