The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) has held its 2025 Statewide K9 Tracking and Training Event, bringing together elite K9 units from across the state for a week of intensive competition and skill-building. The annual event highlights the Department’s investment in advanced training, inter-agency collaboration, and the ongoing development of specialist teams dedicated to public safety.

Designed as both a competition and a professional development opportunity, the event enables FDC’s top-qualified K9 tracking teams to demonstrate their abilities and exchange best practices for responding to critical incidents and emergencies. Participants were drawn from regional contests held earlier in the year, with the top eight teams securing their place at the statewide finals in Brooksville.

Commitment to Public Safety

FDC Secretary Ricky D. Dixon emphasised the importance of the K9 programme to Florida’s broader law enforcement network, describing the teams as a vital part of the state’s public safety infrastructure.

“Our K9 tracking teams are an integral part of public safety in Florida and we are greatly appreciative of the support we receive from Governor DeSantis and the incredible sheriffs we partner with to serve the local communities where our teams live and work,” said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Ricky D. Dixon. “These events are a testament to our dedication to continuous improvement. During every activation our K9 teams respond to, there are lives on the line that depend on us to be at our best.”

Although the K9 units were originally formed to track escaped inmates, such incidents have become increasingly rare due to improved security systems and modern surveillance technology. As a result, the dogs and their handlers are now regularly deployed to assist local police and sheriff’s departments in high-priority operations. Their work includes tracking and apprehending fugitives, as well as locating missing children or vulnerable adults in emergency situations.

Realistic and Rigorous Training

The event’s structure blends timed and scored scenarios with realistic field challenges. Teams competed in both day and night operations, testing their ability to track human scent under a variety of environmental and tactical conditions. Courses were designed to simulate real-world missions, including searches over rough terrain, firearm proficiency drills, and extended tracking distances that test endurance and coordination between handler and dog.

Florida Department of Corrections Special Teams Coordinator Jonathan “Danny” Rummel underscored the importance of the event not just as a competition, but as a means of refining essential operational skills and building resilience within the force.

“This event brings together the top eight teams from regional competitions across the state, culminating in a showcase of the state’s absolute best,” said Florida Department of Corrections Special Teams Coordinator Jonathan “Danny” Rummel. “Each year, these teams compete to see who has trained the hardest and perfected their skills. It’s not just about winning; it’s about public safety and ensuring that our facilities and communities remain secure. This event highlights the dedication and hard work of our teams, and we are incredibly proud of their accomplishments.”

Strengthening Partnerships and Professional Standards

The K9 Tracking and Training Event forms part of a broader strategy within the FDC to maintain operational readiness and strengthen community partnerships. By integrating with county sheriff’s offices and other law enforcement agencies, the Department aims to ensure a rapid, coordinated response whenever tracking teams are called into action.

Officials say the annual gathering is also a morale booster, providing recognition for the demanding, often dangerous work carried out by correctional officers and their canine partners. The competition format fosters camaraderie between regions while reinforcing the Department’s reputation for discipline and professionalism.

A Symbol of Florida’s Commitment to Excellence

For the public, the event offers reassurance that Florida’s correctional services continue to invest in advanced training methods and modern operational practices. For participants, it represents the culmination of months of preparation and a rare opportunity to test their performance against the best in the state.

As Florida continues to modernise its corrections and law enforcement systems, the FDC’s K9 units remain a visible symbol of its commitment to safety, community service, and excellence in training. Events such as the Brooksville showcase demonstrate how disciplined practice, cooperation, and shared expertise contribute directly to safer communities across the state.
