The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System is preparing to unveil a new Homeless Outreach Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) as part of its continuing efforts to improve healthcare access and benefits awareness for veterans across the region.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 6, 2026, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at the VA Eleventh Street Clinic, located at 10159 E. 11th Street in Tulsa. The event will highlight the capabilities of the mobile unit and provide an opportunity for veterans and their families to learn more about the benefits and services available through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
According to the announcement, the purpose of the event is to introduce the new outreach initiative to the community and to help ensure veterans are informed about the support they are entitled to following their service.
The announcement states: “The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health care System will host a Ribbon Cutting ceremony to highlight its Homeless Outreach Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) to inform Veterans about the VA benefits they earned through their service.”
Community event open to veterans and families
The event has been designed as an open and informative gathering for a broad section of the veteran community. Organisers say it will provide an opportunity for veterans and their families to engage directly with healthcare representatives and learn about available programmes.
Veterans, along with spouses, caregivers, survivors, and active-duty service members approaching retirement, have been invited to attend the ceremony and explore the services offered by the VA healthcare system.
The official notice explains: “Veterans, spouses, caregivers, survivors, and active-duty personnel nearing retirement are invited to attend and learn more about VA benefits and services.”
By deploying a mobile medical unit focused on outreach to vulnerable groups, including homeless veterans, the initiative aims to bridge gaps in access to healthcare and support programmes across eastern Oklahoma. Mobile units are increasingly used by healthcare systems to reach underserved populations, particularly in areas where transport barriers or housing instability can limit access to traditional healthcare facilities.
Officials say the unit will serve as both a healthcare delivery platform and an outreach tool, allowing staff to connect veterans with medical care, information about benefits, and referrals to additional services.
Healthcare network serving more than 52,000 veterans
The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System currently provides care to more than 52,000 veterans across 25 counties in the eastern part of the state. Its network includes hospitals and outpatient clinics designed to offer a broad range of medical services.
Among its key facilities is the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee, which provides both surgical and inpatient care. The centre also delivers outpatient primary care services and specialist consultations covering areas such as medicine, surgery and psychiatry.
Alongside the Muskogee medical centre, the healthcare system operates several outpatient clinics across the region. These facilities are located in Muskogee, Tulsa, Idabel, McAlester and Vinita, enabling veterans to access medical services closer to their communities.
The organisation’s broader mission is to ensure veterans receive timely medical treatment, support services and guidance on federal benefits earned during military service.
Outreach focus on vulnerable veterans
Healthcare leaders have increasingly focused on mobile outreach as part of wider strategies to support veterans experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. By taking services directly into communities, mobile medical units can offer screenings, consultations and referrals without requiring patients to travel to fixed healthcare locations.
For veterans facing barriers such as transportation challenges, financial hardship or unstable housing, mobile units can play an important role in ensuring continuity of care and maintaining contact with healthcare providers.
The Tulsa event is expected to provide attendees with an opportunity to see the new unit firsthand and speak with staff about the services it will provide.
