Senior, discussing the implications of the recent round of assembly elections for the opposition. Congress MP Abhishek Singh told Subodh Gildia that the BJP opposition front must be built with consensus and calibration. Excerpts from the interview:
Fought Congress Trinamool But now the congressional leaders are clapping Mamta Banerjee’s victory over the aggressive BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Isn’t this weird?
Even Mamata’s worst enemy has to admit that he has had astonishing success, money, logistics, bombings by federal agencies and the media have all piled up against him. I have no qualms about praising him for flying the secular anti-BJP flag high. That does not mean that we will not try to rebuild Congress in West Bengal.
Later DMCThere are calls to make Mamata the face of the opposition to face Prime Minister Modi in the 2024 elections. What is your opinion?
No one can deny that Mamata should be at the forefront of the BJP opposition. However, the space must be built with consensus and calibration, and it must be an exercise in building an interactive alliance, not individuals or egos. “What, how” must be worked out diligently and quickly and “who” must be carried to the end as a problem.
What is wrong with the congressional strategy for the West Bengal elections that the party has just drawn up?
Importantly, voters in general and those who didn’t like the BJP decided to make sure their votes had maximum impact, so they voted for the winning TMC, thinking that a Left Congress vote would be in vain. As candidates, some of us wanted a different lineup, but as decent soldiers, we opted for the vision of state unity of the Congress-Left Alliance, which may have contributed to this failure.
Did Congress target Mamata and fail in its minority strongholds of Malta-Murshidabad?
The reason for voting for the perceived winner still applies to these districts. Voters are not necessarily opposed to Congress, but one view is that the only way to defeat the BJP is to elect the TMC. The alignment may be different, but once combined with the left, targeting the TMC is unavoidable.
What is clear after 2019 is that the regional parties have managed to defeat the BJP while waiting for Congress. What a problem?
While the results of Congress are dismal, I do not agree with the phrase “in the cave.” We failed, but in Kerala and Assam, and we abandoned the strong struggles Tamil naduAs a friendly country, our strike rate was good. The real bad show is that there is no other option but to recreate it again with new local faces at all levels.
Many believe that leadership is not the only problem plaguing Congress, but are the problems deep?
The current leadership of Congress, including the president Sonia gandhi And Rahul Gandhi is keenly aware of the need to implement the leadership team desired by most congressmen, and it will happen soon. Of course, leadership issues must go hand in hand with strengthening, rediscovering, and revitalizing the foundations of Congress.
