Contreras (4-4) leads the Cardinals’ response to split the London series

LONDON — Paul Goldschmidt scored the go-ahead run off Chicago starter Marcus Stroman in the fourth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cubs 7-5 on Sunday to split the final series.

The Cubs missed a chance to get back to .500 on the season after Stroman (9-5) left the game with a blister on his right index finger.

Instead, the Cardinals put Chicago up 4-0 after an error-laden first inning after a two-game skid.

The Cubs (37-39) won Game 1 9-1, but had their four-game hitting streak snapped. They haven’t hit .500 since May 12, though they’ve won 11 of their last 14 games.

Jordan Hicks, who was unable to pitch Saturday due to illness, got the final three outs for his fourth save — all in the last eight days.

The Cardinals’ bullpen allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings on a warm afternoon before a crowd of 55,565 at the stadium, home to the 2012 Olympics and now the home of Premier League English football team West Ham.

Jake Woodford (2-2) relieved starter Matthew Liberatore at third and went 2 1/3 innings.
