Our Blood Institute Launches August Blood Drive to Support Students and Address Critical O-Negative Blood Shortage

Blood donors across the communities served by Our Blood Institute (OBI) have an opportunity this August to make a broader impact beyond helping hospital patients, as the nonprofit organization launches a campaign that supports local students while addressing an urgent need for blood donations.

From August 1 through August 15, successful blood donors who use the promo code SCHOOL26 will trigger a $20 contribution through OBI’s Donable Cares program. The donations will benefit nonprofit organizations that provide back-to-school resources for students and families, creating an additional community benefit alongside the life-saving impact of blood donations.

The initiative comes at a time when blood centers traditionally face seasonal challenges in maintaining an adequate blood supply. Summer vacations, changing schedules and preparations for the new school year often contribute to fewer blood donations, even as hospitals continue to require a steady supply of blood for surgeries, emergency care and ongoing medical treatments.

In addition to supporting local education-focused nonprofit organizations, OBI is offering donor appreciation incentives through August 22. Eligible donors will receive a limited-edition Dog Days of Summer T-shirt featuring the organization’s BloodHounds Therapy Dogs, a BloodHounds dog bandana for their own pets and a complimentary admission ticket to Frontier City, Hurricane Harbor or Magic Springs Theme and Water Park.

Urgent Need for O-Negative Blood Donors

A key focus of the campaign is increasing donations of O-negative blood, which plays a critical role in emergency medicine. Because O-negative blood can be transfused to patients regardless of their blood type when there is no time for compatibility testing, hospitals rely on maintaining an adequate supply for trauma cases and other life-threatening emergencies.

According to OBI, the organization is currently experiencing an urgent need for O-negative donors as seasonal donation patterns continue to place pressure on available inventories.

The need comes amid broader challenges affecting blood availability nationwide. The organization noted that a major U.S. blood provider has begun limiting distributions of Type O blood to the hospitals it serves because of the severity of the national blood shortage.

OBI emphasized that it has not yet been forced to ration blood to its hospital partners but is encouraging donors to help prevent that possibility by giving blood now. Maintaining healthy blood inventories allows hospitals to continue treating patients without interruptions or difficult allocation decisions during periods of increased demand.

“Whether it’s helping a patient in the hospital or helping a student start the school year with the supplies they need, one blood donation can make a meaningful difference,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of Our Blood Institute. “We hope our communities will roll up their sleeves this August and help us make an even greater impact.”

The campaign highlights the dual impact of blood donation, combining immediate medical benefits with financial support for community organizations that help families prepare for the upcoming academic year.

Blood donation remains one of the most effective ways individuals can support healthcare systems. A single donation can help save up to three lives by providing blood components that may be used for multiple patients requiring transfusions.

The donation process typically takes about one hour from registration through recovery, making it a relatively small time commitment with potentially life-saving results for recipients.

OBI encourages healthy individuals aged 16 and older to consider donating if they meet eligibility requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must weigh at least 125 pounds and provide signed parental permission, while 17-year-olds must also weigh at least 125 pounds. Adults aged 18 and older must weigh at least 110 pounds. All donors are required to present a valid photo ID at the time of donation.

By combining charitable giving, donor appreciation incentives and efforts to strengthen the regional blood supply, the August campaign aims to encourage community participation during one of the most challenging periods of the year for blood collection while helping ensure hospitals remain prepared to meet patient needs.
