The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has launched a nationwide competition offering a $1 million prize pool to small businesses as part of a broader initiative celebrating 250 years of American free enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Known as the Patriot Pitch Competition, the programme is designed to recognise small businesses that are driving innovation, creating jobs, and contributing to economic growth across the United States. The initiative is backed by Clover Network, Inc., with the cash prize fund donated by the payments technology company.
The competition forms part of the wider Freedom 250 campaign and is open to eligible small businesses that have utilised qualifying SBA capital products. Organisers say the contest is intended to highlight the role entrepreneurs continue to play in strengthening the American economy at both local and national levels.
The SBA said businesses entering the competition will progress through four rounds of judging, with finalists selected based on innovation, competitiveness, economic impact, and operational readiness.
“From the family farm to the factory floor, small businesses have punched above their weight for the last 250 years to power America’s economy, which is why the SBA is proud to spotlight the legacy and potential of entrepreneurship through the Patriot Pitch Competition,” said SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler.
“This nationwide contest will award a total of $1 million in cash prizes to small businesses whose innovation, grit and leadership are helping build America’s next great era of strength, prosperity, and competitiveness on the world stage. We look forward to demonstrating how small business is big business for our nation – and to highlighting the resilient job creators and local businesses who are delivering the services, products, and solutions that are defining America’s future.”
Competition to culminate in Washington finals event
The Patriot Pitch Competition will conclude with a live finals event in Washington, D.C., where finalists will present their businesses before a panel of judges and a national audience while competing for a share of the prize pool.
According to the SBA, the judging process will focus on four main criteria: strengthening American competitiveness, demonstrating innovation and industry impact, creating economic opportunity and quality employment, and showing strong business fundamentals with execution capability.
In addition to the live pitch competition, the finals event will also include networking sessions, industry panels, and a supplier matchmaking expo aimed at connecting small businesses with larger firms and potential contracting opportunities.
The SBA said the event will bring together business leaders, policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs from across the country to discuss innovation, growth, and opportunities for small enterprises.
Takis Georgakopoulos, Co-President of Fiserv, whose Clover platform is funding the prize pool, said the initiative reflects the company’s support for entrepreneurship and innovation.
“The Clover team couldn’t be prouder to support SBA’s Patriot Pitch event. This competition truly embodies the spirit of innovation, fierce competition, and American ingenuity – the very same values that define Clover,” said Takis Georgakopoulos, Fiserv Co-President.
Oklahoma businesses encouraged to enter competition
Regional SBA representatives are also encouraging local businesses to participate before the application deadline closes.
Oklahoma District Director Fernanda Pedraza-Schmitt urged entrepreneurs across the state to use the competition as an opportunity to showcase their businesses on a national stage.
“This is a great opportunity for Oklahoma small businesses to showcase their innovativeness and competitiveness,” said Fernanda Pedraza-Schmitt, Oklahoma District Director. “I encourage Oklahoma entrepreneurs to enter by June 10th for a chance to compete for a share of the $1 million prize pool.”
The SBA said the competition is intended not only to reward successful businesses, but also to promote entrepreneurship as a driver of long-term economic resilience and job creation.
The launch comes at a time when policymakers and business groups in the United States continue to emphasise the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises amid changing economic conditions and increased global competition.
Officials said the Patriot Pitch Competition aims to demonstrate how small businesses remain central to innovation and economic development across the country, while also providing participating companies with national exposure and potential access to investors and commercial partnerships.
