El Salvador’s legislative and municipal elections on Sunday represent a kind of popular experiment in the administration of President Naib Bukelin, whose image was placed at the center of the ruling party’s New Ideas (NI) campaign, giving him control of Congress for the next three years so that a formation can be drawn to the people.
Founded in 2018 by the President’s Movement and led by one of his cousins, NI’s Meteor Rise is closely linked to Buccaneer’s popularity and supports people’s nutrition with traditional parties.
A recent study by the Jesuit Central American University (UCA), published before the ban on the referendum came into effect, indicates that the NI will be the only supporter to obtain an absolute majority (56).
The Salvador Legislature is made up of 84 members, 43 of whom are required to make ordinary decisions and 56 to approve foreign debt. It is necessary to elect Supreme Court justices and reform the constitution.
Wrong picture?
Polls show that for more than a year and a half after confronting the president’s executive, Salvadorans’ assessment of his administration has been virtually non – existent.
According to a recent UCA (UTOP) public opinion poll, Salvadorans currently ranks 8.3 out of 0.3.
In June 2020, after serving a year in power, it was 7.71 and 7.8 at the end of 2019.
A study by Centro de Estudios Ciudanos (CEC) at Francisco Cavidia University last January gave the president a score of 8.87, up from 8.7 in April 2020 and 8.67 in September 2020.
The IDP survey also shows that 57.5% of people consider Buckle’s government to be “very close” or “close”.
This closeness and even stronger image could explain why the NII is campaigning based on the image of the president, with the message that Naib is the party with me.
Political parties spent more than $ 12.3 million to campaign from November 2020 to February 2021, according to a study by the Axion Ceutana organization.
Of that total, NI would have spent $ 8.72 million, representing 71% of total advertising spending.
The fall of the legal two parties
In 2017, Farabundo Marty joined the National Liberation Front (FMLN).
His victory put an end to three decades of Arena governments (1989-2009) and FMLN (2009-2019), an event that could occur in the legislature by halting the distribution of majority representation between the two political institutions.
The recent history of El Salvador’s legislative system is marked by both parties still having a majority of representatives.
Opinion polls indicate that the FMLN may fall into an opposition without too much weight in Congress, as the simple majority can come up with new ideas and qualify with a union with a large coalition for national unity (Ghana, right). There are 10 delegates.
This far-right party is the N.I.
The forthcoming success of the new ideas means that the president will give the rest of his time unopposed, which experts and opponents explain as a concentration of power.
