(CNN Espasol) – Former Argentine President Carlos Menem has died at the age of 90, according to CNN. He is 90 years old.

Menem was born in 1930 in the province of La Rioja. He was governor of his province by judiciary or peronism until his arrest from 1973 to the 1976 military coup.

He was President of Argentina between 1989 and 1999. He won a landslide victory over then-ruler Raul Alphonse.

At his behest, he passed state and economic reform laws, privatized some companies, stabilized the economy, and curbed inflation.

Carlos Menem Bakto de Olivos, son of Syrian immigrants, promoted constitutional reform, which he agreed with Raul Alphonse. He failed to reform the constitution to get a third term. In 1999 he handed over power to elected President Fernando de la Ria.

In the 2003 presidential election, he was the candidate with 24.4% of the vote. However, he decided not to run in the second round, allowing Naster Kirschner, who was second in the first round, to be elected as the new president. For the province of La Rioja from 2005 to 2019, he was active in politics as the National Senator of the Justiceista Party, he joined the Peronist Alliance Frende de Todos, and was re-elected to the Senate until 2023.

He married Julema Yoma with former Miss Universe and Chilean TV presenter Cecilia Poloko, and they had four children.
